==Naval career==
Fellowes joined the [Royal Navy](/source/Royal_Navy) in 1836.<ref name=loney>[https://www.pdavis.nl/ShowBiog.php?id=1078 William Loney RN]</ref> He fought in the [Second Opium War](/source/Second_Opium_War), and as Commander of [HMS ''Cruizer''](/source/HMS_Cruizer_(1852)), is credited with having been the first person to climb the walls of [Canton](/source/Guangzhou) in 1856 before any other officer or man of the [Naval Brigade](/source/Naval_Brigade).<ref>[http://www.pdavis.nl/China2.htm W.L. Promoted to [captain](/source/Captain_(naval)) in 1858, he was given command of [HMS ''Princess Royal''](/source/HMS_Princess_Royal_(1853)), [HMS ''Revenge''](/source/HMS_Revenge_(1859)), [HMS ''Marlborough''](/source/HMS_Marlborough_(1855)), [HMS ''Duke of Wellington''](/source/HMS_Duke_of_Wellington_(1852)), [HMS ''Duncan''](/source/HMS_Duncan_(1859)) and then [HMS ''Indus''](/source/HMS_Indus_(1839)).<ref name=loney/> He was appointed Captain Superintendent of [Chatham](/source/Chatham_Dockyard) dockyard in 1874, Admiral Superintendent of Chatham dockyard in 1876 and [Commander-in-Chief, Channel Fleet](/source/Channel_Fleet) in 1885,<ref name=loney/> serving on [HMS Minotaur](/source/HMS_Minotaur_(1863)). He died in that role the following year.<ref name=loney/>

He is buried in the south-west corner of the north section of [Dean Cemetery](/source/Dean_Cemetery) in [Edinburgh](/source/Edinburgh) against the dividing wall to the earlier original cemetery.<ref name=grave>Details shown on Charles Fellowes' gravestone</ref>

In 1859 he married Louisa Garden Tod (1828–1908).<ref name=loney/> Their eldest son was Rev John Charles Fellowes MA (1860–1927).<ref name=grave/>
