# Charles Coke

[Admiral](/source/Admiral) **Sir Charles Henry Coke** [KCVO](/source/Royal_Victorian_Order) (2 October 1854 – 23 February 1945) was a [Royal Navy](/source/Royal_Navy) officer who served during the [First World War](/source/World_War_I).

## Early life

Coke was born on 2 October 1854 in the village of [Ropsley](/source/Ropsley) in [Lincolnshire](/source/Lincolnshire) where his father was the local rector.[1]

## Naval career

Coke joined the Royal Navy on 7 April 1868 when he entered the training ship [*Britannia*](/source/Britannia_Royal_Naval_College), in 1872 was appointed a [midshipman](/source/Midshipman) on the [corvette](/source/Corvette) [HMS *Druid*](/source/HMS_Druid_(1869)).[1] Coke served during the [Third Anglo-Ashanti War](/source/Third_Anglo-Ashanti_War) and was present during the attack on [Elmina](/source/Elmina) on 13 June 1873, he was awarded the [Ashantee Medal](/source/Ashantee_Medal).[1] He was appointed [lieutenant](/source/Lieutenant) on [HMY *Victoria and Albert*](/source/HMY_Victoria_and_Albert_(1855)) on 5 September 1877.[2] In 1880 he served on the gun-vessel [HMS *Fly*](/source/HMS_Fly_(1867)) on the [China Station](/source/Commander-in-Chief,_China), returning to England two years later to do a gunnery course.[1] In 1889 he took command of the sailing [brig](/source/Brig) [HMS *Pilot*](/source/HMS_Pilot_(1879)).[1] Promoted to [Commander](/source/Commander_(Royal_Navy)) in 1892 he moved to HMS *Active* before moving on to command [HMS *Ganges*](/source/HMS_Ganges_(shore_establishment)), a boys [training ship](/source/Training_ship) at [Falmouth](/source/Falmouth,_Cornwall).[1] He became commanding officer of the [cruiser](/source/Cruiser) [HMS *Sirius*](/source/HMS_Sirius_(1890)) in July 1899, Divisional Transport Officer posted to [HMS *Eagle*](/source/HMS_Eagle_(1804)) in March 1900,[3] and commanding officer of the cruiser [HMS *Talbot*](/source/HMS_Talbot_(1895)) in July 1900. In February 1901 he was appointed commanding officer of the cruiser [HMS *Terpsichore*](/source/HMS_Terpsichore_(1890)), serving at the [Cape of Good Hope Station](/source/Cape_of_Good_Hope_Station). He went on to be commanding officer of the cruiser [HMS *Scylla*](/source/HMS_Scylla_(1891)) in April 1904 and of the [battleship](/source/Battleship) [HMS *Cornwallis*](/source/HMS_Cornwallis_(1901)) in January 1905.[4]

After that Coke became Captain, [Sheerness](/source/Sheerness) Gunnery School in January 1907, [Senior Officer on the Coast of Ireland](/source/Commander-in-Chief,_Coast_of_Ireland) in April 1911[5] and commander of the Newfoundland Patrol Service in March 1917.[6]

## Family life

Coke married Anna Marie Madeleine Fergusson in 1883 and they had one son and a daughter.[1] Coke died at Hughenden, [Exmouth](/source/Exmouth), [Devon](/source/Devon) on 23 February 1945 aged 90.[1]
