# Charles Barnett-Clarke

**Charles William Barnett-Clarke** (16 July 1830 – 23 February 1916) was a long serving [Dean](/source/Dean_(religion)) of [Cape Town](/source/St._George's_Cathedral,_Cape_Town), South Africa.[1][2]

Clarke was baptised 8 October 1830 at [St Chad's Church, Shrewsbury](/source/St_Chad's_Church,_Shrewsbury), [Shropshire](/source/Shropshire), the son of Charles Thomas Hughes Clarke and his wife, Maria Barnett. He was educated at [Worcester College, Oxford](/source/Worcester_College,_Oxford)[3] and [ordained](/source/Ordained) in 1855. After a [curacy](/source/Curate) at St Andrew, Wells Street he was [4] [Perpetual curate](/source/Perpetual_curate) of [Toot Baldon](/source/Toot_Baldon), [Oxfordshire](/source/Oxfordshire)[5] and then [Rector](/source/Rector_(ecclesiastical)) of [Cadmore](/source/Cadmore)[6] before his South African appointment. He died in Cape Town, aged 85.
