**Charbel Awni Shamoon** ([Arabic](/source/Arabic_language): شربل عوني شمعون, pronounced [\[ʃarˈbæl ʕuːˈni ʃamˈʕuː\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA);[1] born 10 February 2004) is a professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who plays as a [right-back](/source/Right-back) for [A-League Men](/source/A-League_Men) club [Perth Glory](/source/Perth_Glory_FC). Born in Syria, he plays for the [Iraq national team](/source/Iraq_national_football_team).

## Club career

Shamoon made his [A-League](/source/A-League_Men) debut in February 2024 as a 59th-minute substitute in a 2–0 loss away to [Wellington Phoenix](/source/Wellington_Phoenix_FC).[2] Six days later, he made his starting debut in a 2–0 win against [Newcastle](/source/Newcastle_United_Jets_FC).[3] After making seven appearances in his debut season with [Western United](/source/Western_United_FC), he was rewarded with his first professional contract in September 2024, ahead of the [2024–25](/source/2024%E2%80%9325_A-League_Men) season.[4][5]

Following the suspension of Western United's participation ahead of the [2025–26 season](/source/2025%E2%80%9326_Western_United_FC_season), all players – including Shamoon – were released from their contracts in September 2025.[6][7]

## International career

### Iraq U20

Eligible to represent Australia and Iraq, Shamoon obtained an [Iraqi passport](/source/Iraqi_passport) in December 2022.[8][9] He was called up to a training camp of the [Iraq U20 national team](/source/Iraq_national_under-20_football_team) in Ukraine in 2022.[10] He was then called up to the Iraq squad that travelled to Uzbekistan for the [2023 AFC U-20 Asian Cup](/source/2023_AFC_U-20_Asian_Cup).[11] Despite picking up a [red card](/source/Red_card_(association_football)), leading to a three-game suspension, Shamoon helped Iraq reach the final, who were eventually beaten by the hosts, achieving qualification to the [2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup](/source/2023_FIFA_U-20_World_Cup).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] Having participated in the training camp in [Cádiz](/source/C%C3%A1diz), Spain, that preceded the tournament,[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] Shamoon was not selected for the final squad.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

### Australia U23

Since the U-20 Asian Cup, Shamoon had not been selected by any of Iraq's national teams. This, along with his performances for the [first team at Western United](/source/Western_United_FC), led to Shamoon being selected by the [Australia U23](/source/Australia_men's_national_under-23_soccer_team) towards the end of 2024.[12]

### Iraq

After being called up to the Australian U23 set-up, [Iraq senior national team](/source/Iraq_national_football_team) manager [Jesús Casas](/source/Jes%C3%BAs_Casas) attempted to call up Shamoon for the [26th Arabian Gulf Cup](/source/26th_Arabian_Gulf_Cup) in December 2024, but his club rejected to release him for international duty.[13]

On 13 March 2025, Shamoon was called up for the Iraq national team for [2026 FIFA World Cup qualification](/source/2026_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification) matches against Kuwait and Palestine.[14]
