Chandra Shekhar Azad Memorial

**Chandra Shekhar Azad Park** (also known by its [former name](/source/List_of_renamed_places_in_India) **Alfred Park**, and **Company Bagh** during the [Company Raj](/source/Company_Raj)) is a [public park](/source/Public_park) in [Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh](/source/Prayagraj%2C_Uttar_Pradesh), India. Built in 1870 to mark [Prince Alfred](/source/Alfred%2C_Duke_of_Saxe-Coburg_and_Gotha)'s visit to the city, with an area of 54 hectares, it is the biggest park in Prayagraj.[2][3] It was renamed by the [Uttar Pradesh Government](/source/Uttar_Pradesh_Government) after revolutionary [Chandra Shekhar Azad](/source/Chandra_Shekhar_Azad), who sacrificed his life here during the [Indian independence movement](/source/Indian_independence_movement) in 1931.

## History

In 1870, old cantonments were transformed into a park when, after the [Rebellion of 1857](/source/Rebellion_of_1857), new areas were developed.

## Location

The park is in the [Georgetown](/source/Georgetown%2C_Allahabad) neighborhood and is surrounded by [Tagoretown](/source/Tagoretown), [Civil Lines](/source/Civil_Lines%2C_Prayagraj) and the [University of Allahabad](/source/University_of_Allahabad). ## Landmarks

Being a big park it has some very important heritage and recreational sites.

- **Chandra Shekhar Azad Memorial**, where Azad sacrificed his life

- **Victoria Memorial**. Large canopy made of Italian limestone, dedicated to [Queen Victoria](/source/Queen_Victoria). It was opened on 24 March 1906 by [James Digges La Touche](/source/James_Digges_La_Touche).[4] The canopy once sheltered a huge statue of Queen Victoria which was later removed.[5]

Being the biggest park, it attracts a large number of people. according to an estimate, approximately 5000 people visit this park in duration of 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
