**Chandler Levack** (born 1986 or 1987) is a Canadian writer, director, and filmmaker.[1]

Levack is best known for her work as an entertainment writer, and for her [feature film directorial debut](/source/List_of_directorial_debuts), *[I Like Movies](/source/I_Like_Movies)*, which premiered in the Discovery program at the [2022 Toronto International Film Festival](/source/2022_Toronto_International_Film_Festival) to critical acclaim.[2][3][4] She has also directed the feature films *[Mile End Kicks](/source/Mile_End_Kicks)* (2025) and *[Roommates](/source/Roommates_(2026_film))* (2026).

## Early life

Levack was born in [Toronto](/source/Toronto) and raised in [Brantford](/source/Brantford), [Ontario](/source/Ontario).[5] In 2004, Levack returned to live in Toronto's [Parkdale neighbourhood](/source/Parkdale%2C_Toronto).[5]

## Career

Levack dropped out of her cinema studies courses at the [University of Toronto](/source/University_of_Toronto) to pursue a career as a writer.[6] Since then, she has worked as an arts and entertainment writer for publications including *[Toronto Life](/source/Toronto_Life)*, *[SPIN](/source/Spin_(magazine))*, *[The Globe and Mail](/source/The_Globe_and_Mail)*, and the *[Toronto Star](/source/Toronto_Star)*.

Levack is a two-time [Juno Award](/source/Juno_Award) nominee for [Video of the Year](/source/Juno_Award_for_Video_of_the_Year), receiving nominations alongside [Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux](/source/Jeremy_Schaulin-Rioux) at the [Juno Awards of 2015](/source/Juno_Awards_of_2015) for directing [PUP](/source/Pup_(band))'s "Guilt Trip" music video,[7] and at the [Juno Awards of 2016](/source/Juno_Awards_of_2016) for directing PUP's "Dark Days" music video.[8]

She was a [Prism Prize](/source/Prism_Prize) nominee for both "Guilt Trip"[9] and "Dark Days",[10] and has also directed music videos for [DZ Deathrays](/source/DZ_Deathrays) and [Jeremy Dutcher](/source/Jeremy_Dutcher).

[Matthew Miller](/source/Matthew_Miller_(filmmaker))'s production company Zapruder Films (which he co-founded with [Matt Johnson](/source/Matt_Johnson_(director))), launched a contest in 2016 to back a first-time female screenwriter with [$](/source/Canadian_dollar)12,000 in funding, story editor guidance, and script optioning; Levack and her feature film *Anglophone* were announced as the winner from 137 entries.[11]

Her debut as a narrative filmmaker, the short film *[We Forgot to Break Up](/source/We_Forgot_to_Break_Up_(2017_film))*, premiered at the [2017 Toronto International Film Festival](/source/2017_Toronto_International_Film_Festival),[12] and won the award for [Best Canadian Short Film](/source/Whistler_Film_Festival_ShortWork_Awards) at the 2017 [Whistler Film Festival](/source/Whistler_Film_Festival).[13]

Levak later studied screenwriting at the [Canadian Film Centre](/source/Canadian_Film_Centre).[14]

*[I Like Movies](/source/I_Like_Movies)*, Levack's [debut feature film](/source/List_of_directorial_debuts), premiered in the Discovery program at the [2022 Toronto International Film Festival](/source/2022_Toronto_International_Film_Festival),[2] and received widespread acclaim.[3] On the [review aggregator](/source/Review_aggregator) website [Rotten Tomatoes](/source/Rotten_Tomatoes), the film [holds an approval rating of 100%](/source/List_of_films_with_a_100%25_rating_on_Rotten_Tomatoes) based on 35 reviews, with an average rating of 8/10.[3] The film was named to TIFF's annual year-end [Canada's Top Ten](/source/Canada's_Top_Ten) list for 2022.[15]

Levack won the [$](/source/Canadian_dollar)10,000 [RBC](/source/Royal_Bank_of_Canada) Emerging Artist Award at the 2022 [Calgary International Film Festival](/source/Calgary_International_Film_Festival) for the film.[16]

In 2023, Barry Hertz of *[The Globe and Mail](/source/The_Globe_and_Mail)* named the film as one of the 23 best Canadian comedy films ever made.[4]

In November 2023, she was announced as the director of *[My Dead Mom](/source/My_Dead_Mom)*, a short-form comedy series which premiered in 2024 on [Crave](/source/Crave_(TV_network)).[17]

In 2024, it was announced that Levack's second feature, *[Mile End Kicks](/source/Mile_End_Kicks)* (retitled from *Anglophone*), would star [Barbie Ferreira](/source/Barbie_Ferreira), [Devon Bostick](/source/Devon_Bostick), [Stanley Simons](/source/Stanley_Simons), and [Juliette Gariépy](/source/Juliette_Gari%C3%A9py).[18] The film is based on Levack's experiences as a young female music critic.[19] The film premiered at the [2025 Toronto International Film Festival](/source/2025_Toronto_International_Film_Festival).[20]

Her third feature film as a director was the [Netflix](/source/Netflix) film *[Roommates](/source/Roommates_(2026_film))* for [Happy Madison Productions](/source/Happy_Madison_Productions), which was released in April 2026.[21][22]
