'''Champignac''', or specifically '''Champignac-en-Cambrousse''', is a fictional village frequently featured in the adventures of ''[Spirou et Fantasio](/source/Spirou_et_Fantasio)'' by [André Franquin](/source/Andr%C3%A9_Franquin) and the successive authors. The initial idea of Champignac is attributed to [Henri Gillain](/source/Henri_Gillain).<ref name="Gillain (Henri)">{{cite web |title=Gillain (Henri) (Scénario) |website=Dupuis | url = http://www.dupuis.com/servlet/jpecat?pgm=VIEW_AUTHOR&lang=FR&AUTEUR_ID=171 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20030502092609/http://www.dupuis.com/servlet/jpecat?pgm=VIEW_AUTHOR&lang=FR&AUTEUR_ID=171 |archive-date=2003-05-02 |language=fr}}</ref> The village was introduced in the adventure ''[Il y a un sorcier à Champignac](/source/Il_y_a_un_sorcier_%C3%A0_Champignac)'', first published in ''[Spirou](/source/Spirou_(magazine))'' magazine in 1950.

==Features==
The village is placed in a rural region of [Belgium](/source/Belgium) (despite the name's suffix suggesting a location in the south of [France](/source/France)), and is known for its prolific occurrence of [mushroom](/source/mushroom)s.<ref name="Franquin.com-Lieux imaginaires">{{cite web |website=Franquin | title =Lieux imaginaires | url =http://www.franquin.com/dossiers/file/dossier-2005101653/ | archive-url =https://web.archive.org/web/20070927202954/http://www.franquin.com/dossiers/file/dossier-2005101653/ | archive-date =2007-09-27 |language=fr}}</ref> Mainly a farming community, the commune is home to several central and more obscure characters of the ''Spirou'' adventures, most notably [the Count of Champignac](/source/List_of_characters_in_Spirou_et_Fantasio) whose [château](/source/ch%C3%A2teau) is a prominent fixture of the region. [The Mayor of Champignac](/source/List_of_characters_in_Spirou_et_Fantasio), Gustave Labarbe, is also a public presence, in statues, billboards and in person. The Mayor's assistant, [Duplumier](/source/List_of_characters_in_Spirou_et_Fantasio) is often seen on his bicycle, and the former pharmacist and town drunk, [Dupilon](/source/Characters_in_Spirou_et_Fantasio), is frequently visible. Other inhabitants from the wide gallery of secondary characters are [Noël](/source/Characters_in_Spirou_et_Fantasio), a little boy and friend of the [Marsupilami](/source/Marsupilami), Jérôme the policeman, Jules the who runs the local garage and [filling station](/source/filling_station), A. Tachetoux (French for "Stains-everything") the bookseller, and Eugene the grocer.<ref name="Franquin.com-Lieux imaginaires"/>

==Role==
During the course of the ''Spirou'' stories that have taken place in Champignac, the village population as a whole has been exploited as a "victim character" in several of the plots. The ways in which the population has been victimized are:
*''[Il y a un sorcier à Champignac](/source/Il_y_a_un_sorcier_%C3%A0_Champignac)'': confused [guinea pigs](/source/guinea_pigs) in the Count's mushroom experiments, they turn into an angry lynch-mob.
*''[Le voyageur du Mésozoïque](/source/Le_voyageur_du_M%C3%A9sozo%C3%AFque)'': the village is devastated by a [dinosaur](/source/dinosaur).
*''[Z comme Zorglub](/source/Z_comme_Zorglub)'': the villagers are mass-hypnotized into angry, destructive vandals.
*''[L'ombre du Z](/source/L'ombre_du_Z)'': the entire population is paralyzed by [Zorglub](/source/Zorglub)'s ''zorglonde'' stunning-ray.
*''[Qui arrêtera Cyanure?](/source/Qui_arr%C3%AAtera_Cyanure%3F)'': the villagers are being mind-controlled.
*''[Le Rayon noir](/source/Le_Rayon_noir)'': the predominantly [white](/source/white_people) population is turned [black](/source/black_people).
