# Chalus Road

**Chalus Road** (Persian: جاده چالوس), officially known as "Road 59"[1] is one of the most popular and busiest roads in Iran, which begins in [Alborz province](/source/Alborz_province) and connecting [Karaj](/source/Karaj) and [Tehran](/source/Tehran) to [Chalus](/source/Chalus,_Iran) on the [Caspian Sea](/source/Caspian_Sea) coasts. Chalus road is also important for many people of [Greater Tehran](/source/Greater_Tehran) to go to popular tourist attractions in the [Northern Iran](/source/Northern_Iran) on weekends and holidays. The main tunnel that crosses [Alborz Massif](/source/Alborz) on this road is [Kandovan](/source/Kandovan_Tunnel), which was built in 1938 as one of the first road tunnels in Iran.[2]
