**Chalfont St Giles** is a village and [civil parish](/source/Civil_parish) in southeast [Buckinghamshire](/source/Buckinghamshire), England. It is in a group of villages called **The Chalfonts**, which also includes [Chalfont St Peter](/source/Chalfont_St_Peter) and [Little Chalfont](/source/Little_Chalfont).

It lies on the edge of the [Chiltern Hills](/source/Chiltern_Hills), 20.9 miles (33.6 km) west-northwest of [Charing Cross](/source/Charing_Cross), central London, and near [Seer Green](/source/Seer_Green), [Jordans](/source/Jordans%2C_Buckinghamshire), [Chalfont St Peter](/source/Chalfont_St_Peter), [Little Chalfont](/source/Little_Chalfont) and [Amersham](/source/Amersham).[2]

The [cockney rhyming slang](/source/Cockney_rhyming_slang) term "chalfonts", meaning [haemorrhoids](/source/Haemorrhoids) (piles), is derived from the name of the village.[3] The village has a [duck pond](/source/Duck_pond) that is fed by the [River Misbourne](/source/River_Misbourne). The village sign was designed and painted by Doreen Wilcockson ARCA in 2001.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] Chalfont St Giles is famous for the poet [Milton’s](/source/John_Milton) only surviving home.[4]

## History

In the [Domesday Book](/source/Domesday_Book) of 1086, Chalfont St Giles and Chalfont St Peter were listed as separate Manors with different owners, called 'Celfunte', which is likely derived from "cealc funta*"* - the [Old English](/source/Old_English) for chalk stream.[5] They were separate holdings before the [Norman Conquest](/source/Norman_Conquest).

The [Church of England parish church](/source/Church_of_England_parish_church) of [Saint Giles](/source/Saint_Giles) is of [Norman architecture](/source/Norman_architecture) and dates from the 12th century.[6] The church features a [lychgate](/source/Lychgate) and wall paintings from the early 14th century.[7] During the [English Civil War](/source/English_Civil_War), some iron cannonballs were embedded in the stonework around the east window; they were believed to have been fired by [Oliver Cromwell](/source/Oliver_Cromwell)'s troops when camped in the neighbouring field after the [Battle of Aylesbury](/source/Battle_of_Aylesbury).[8] Three of these balls are now on display in John Milton's Cottage in the village. Bishop [Francis Hare](/source/Francis_Hare_(bishop)) is buried in his family mausoleum in the churchyard.

[Milton's Cottage](/source/Milton's_Cottage), at 1 Deanway, Chalfont St Giles

During the [Great Plague of London](/source/Great_Plague_of_London) in 1665, [John Milton](/source/John_Milton) retired to Chalfont St Giles where he completed his epic poem *[Paradise Lost](/source/Paradise_Lost)*.[9] [Milton's Cottage](/source/Milton's_Cottage) still stands in the village, and is open to the public. The inspiration for *[Paradise Regained](/source/Paradise_Regained)* is said to have been found in this parish from a conversation with a former pupil, [Thomas Ellwood](/source/Thomas_Ellwood). In 1887, after an attempt was made to relocate the house to America and rebuild it there, a movement was begun locally to purchase the house by local public subscription. [Queen Victoria](/source/Queen_Victoria) headed the list with a gift of £20,[10] a considerable amount at the time – approximately £2,360 as of 2016.

Like most other rural parishes, it managed its civil affairs through the [vestry](/source/Administrative_vestry) until the [Local Government Act 1894](/source/Local_Government_Act_1894) required all parishes of over 300 people to have a [Parish council](/source/Parish_councils_in_England) independent of the Church. The village was the birthplace of cricketer [J. T. Hearne](/source/J._T._Hearne), one of the greatest [bowlers](/source/Bowler_(cricket)) of the 1890s and 1900s, who died there in 1944, and of the actress [Alexandra Gilbreath](/source/Alexandra_Gilbreath).

Notable residents of the village have included [Ozzy Osbourne](/source/Ozzy_Osbourne),[11] [Harry Golombek](/source/Harry_Golombek), [Brian Connolly](/source/Brian_Connolly), [Brian Cant](/source/Brian_Cant), [Chicane](/source/Chicane_(musician)),[12] [Armando Iannucci](/source/Armando_Iannucci), [Noel Gallagher](/source/Noel_Gallagher),[13] and [Nick Clegg](/source/Nick_Clegg) who became the [Liberal Democrats](/source/Liberal_Democrats_(UK)) party leader in 2007[14] and [Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom](/source/Deputy_Prime_Minister_of_the_United_Kingdom) from 2010 to 2015.

The village has given its name to [Chalfont](/source/Chalfont%2C_Pennsylvania), [Pennsylvania](/source/Pennsylvania), which is a borough in [Bucks County](/source/Bucks_County%2C_Pennsylvania), Pennsylvania.

The [Chiltern Open Air Museum](/source/Chiltern_Open_Air_Museum), located immediately outside the parish boundary, rescues and re-erects historic buildings which face demolition, from medieval to modern. Its collection includes a cottage from around 1600, and a variety of 19th century buildings, within 45 acres (18 ha) of parkland.[15]

The [Buckinghamshire Building Society](/source/Buckinghamshire_Building_Society) was founded in 1907 as the Chalfont & District Permanent Building Society, and it continues to have its headquarters and sole branch in the village.[16]

## Future

[High Speed 2](/source/High_Speed_2) will pass underneath the village in the [Chiltern tunnel](/source/Chiltern_tunnel). A ventilation shaft will be constructed near the village, disguised as a barn.[17]

It was the location for the filming of [Episode 6 of Series 3](/source/Quantocking#Series_3:_2005) of *[Peep Show](/source/Peep_Show_(British_TV_series))*.[25] A series 2 episode of the Channel 5 series No Place Like Home was predominantly filmed in Chalfont St Giles, with Fern Britton, a former resident, touring viewers around the village.[26] The village hosted a 2015 episode of [Storage Hunters UK](/source/Storage_Hunters).[27]

The village is also mentioned in the series 3 episode of *[Jeeves and Wooster](/source/Jeeves_and_Wooster)* entitled "Bertie Sets Sail", when Bertie Wooster likens Lord Wilmot Pershaw's demeanour to "a wet weekend in Chalfont St. Giles". Other films and TV shows filmed in Chalfont St Giles include *[Hammer House of Horror](/source/Hammer_House_of_Horror)*,[28] *[The Sweeney](/source/The_Sweeney)*,[29] and *[The Big Job](/source/The_Big_Job_(film))* (1965),[30] starring [Sid James](/source/Sid_James) and [Dick Emery](/source/Dick_Emery). The village is ideal for film production due to its close proximity to [Pinewood Studios](/source/Pinewood_Studios) in Iver Heath, and London.

The Chalfont St Giles Community Library has featured twice on BBC's [The One Show](/source/The_One_Show); first in 2010[31] and for a second time in 2012.[32] The segments highlighted the importance of the library to the community and how volunteers have helped keep it operational.
