**Chainpur** ([Nepali](/source/Nepali_language): चैनपुर नगरपालिका, Chainpur Nagarpalika; in Nepali) is a [municipality](/source/Municipality) in [Sankhuwasabha District](/source/Sankhuwasabha_District) in the [Koshi Province](/source/Koshi_Province) of north-eastern [Nepal](/source/Nepal). It was formed by merging five villages i.e. **Chainpur**, [Siddhakali](/source/Siddhakali), [Siddhapokhari](/source/Siddhapokhari), [Baneshwar](/source/Baneshwor,_Sankhuwasabha) and [Kharang](/source/Kharang). The municipality was implemented on 18 May 2014.[1][2] At the time of the [1991 Nepal census](/source/1991_Nepal_census) it had a population of 4933 people in 948 households.[3]

Chainpur is an ancient market place of the eastern region of Nepal. It has been famous for hundreds of years for the [Karuwa](/source/Karuwa), a special kind of water mug with a pipe tap sculptured with artistic carving on exterior of it.

It used to be district headquarters of Sankhuwasabha before it was shifted to [Khandbari](/source/Khandbari).

Chainpur is famous for making Khukuri.

## Demographics

At the time of the [2011 Nepal census](/source/2011_Nepal_census), Chainpur Municipality had a population of 27,462. Of these, 48.4% spoke [Nepali](/source/Nepali_language), 13.6% [Tamang](/source/Tamang_language), 10.4% [Sherpa](/source/Sherpa_language), 9.6% [Limbu](/source/Limbu_language), 3.3% [Yakkha](/source/Yakkha_language), 2.8% [Newar](/source/Newar_language), 2.0% [Chamling](/source/Chamling_language), 1.8% [Magar](/source/Magar_language), 1.7% [Khaling](/source/Khaling_language), 1.6% [Rai](/source/Kiranti_languages), 1.4% [Thulung](/source/Thulung_language), 0.9% [Kulung](/source/Kulung_language_(Nepal)), 0.8% [Gurung](/source/Gurung_language), 0.4% [Jerung](/source/Jerung_language), 0.2% Dumi, 0.2% [Maithili](/source/Maithili_language), 0.1% [Bantawa](/source/Bantawa_language), 0.1% [Nachhiring](/source/Nachhiring_language), 0.1% [Puma](/source/Puma_language), 0.1% [Rajasthani](/source/Rajasthani_languages) and 0.3% other languages as their first language.[4]

In terms of ethnicity/caste, 24.7% were [Chhetri](/source/Chhetri), 15.1% [Tamang](/source/Tamang_people), 10.5% [Sherpa](/source/Sherpa_people), 10.2% [Limbu](/source/Limbu_people), 7.8% [Rai](/source/Rai_people), 6.1% [Hill Brahmin](/source/Bahun), 6.1% [Newar](/source/Newar_people), 4.0% [Kami](/source/Kami_(caste)), 3.7% [Yakkha](/source/Yakkha_people), 2.3% [Magar](/source/Magars), 2.0% [Damai](/source/Damai)/Dholi, 2.0% [Sarki](/source/Sarki_(ethnic_group)), 1.0% [Gurung](/source/Gurung_people), 0.8% Chamling, 0.8% Thulung, 0.7% Khaling, 0.6% Kulung, 0.3% Gharti/[Bhujel](/source/Bhujel), 0.3% Sanyasi/Dasnami, 0.1% Bantawa, 0.1% other [Dalit](/source/Dalit), 0.1% Dhandi, 0.1% Majhi, 0.1% [Marwadi](/source/Marwari_language), 0.1% [Tharu](/source/Tharu_people), 0.1% [Yadav](/source/Yadav) and 0.5% others.[5]

In terms of religion, 48.3% were [Hindu](/source/Hinduism_in_Nepal), 28.3% [Buddhist](/source/Buddhism_in_Nepal), 21.4% [Kirati](/source/Kirat_Mundhum), 1.4% [Christian](/source/Christianity_in_Nepal), 0.1% [Jain](/source/Jainism_in_Nepal), 0.1% [Prakriti](/source/Animism) and 0.4% others.[6]

In terms of literacy, 71.6% could read and write, 2.5% could only read and 25.9% could neither read nor write.[7]
