**Cerrito**, officially **Cerrito de la Victoria**, is a *[barrio](/source/Barrio)* (neighbourhood or district) of [Montevideo](/source/Montevideo), [Uruguay](/source/Uruguay). Most of the barrio is on a hill (*cerrito* is Spanish for "hill") on which is the church named [Santuario Nacional del Cerrito](/source/Santuario_Nacional_del_Coraz%C3%B3n_de_Jes%C3%BAs%2C_Montevideo). This hill was the seat of the temporary government of [General Oribe](/source/Manuel_Oribe) during his [siege of Montevideo](/source/Great_Siege_of_Montevideo).

## Location

Cerrito de la Victoria borders [Aires Puros](/source/Aires_Puros) to the west, [Las Acacias](/source/Las_Acacias%2C_Montevideo) to the north, [Pérez Castellanos](/source/P%C3%A9rez_Castellanos) to the east, [Bolívar](/source/Bol%C3%ADvar%2C_Montevideo) and [Brazo Oriental](/source/Brazo_Oriental) to the south.
