Historic quarter of Lima, Peru

Not to be confused with [Lima District](/source/Lima_District), an administrative division created in 1823.

Map of Lima in 1750.

The **Cercado de Lima** ('Walled Lima'), **Damero de Pizarro** ('Pizarro's Checkerboard'), or **Lima Cuadrada** ('Squared Lima') is an area of the [historic center](/source/Historic_Centre_of_Lima) of [Lima](/source/Lima) (capital of [Peru](/source/Peru)) located within the [old walls of the city](/source/Walls_of_Lima).[1]

The area of the Cercado de Lima corresponds to the original layout of the city. It contains the main historical monuments of the city and several of the public buildings of the [government of Peru](/source/Government_of_Peru) including the [Government Palace](/source/Government_Palace_(Peru)) and the [Metropolitan Cathedral of Lima](/source/Metropolitan_Cathedral_of_Lima).[2]

## Name and boundaries

The area's current boundaries within the city are the [Rímac River](/source/R%C3%ADmac_River) to the north, [Abancay Avenue](/source/Avenida_Abancay) to the east, [Colmena Avenue](/source/Avenida_Nicol%C3%A1s_de_Pi%C3%A9rola) to the south and [Tacna Avenue](/source/Avenida_Tacna) to the west.[3][4][5]

Its name derives from it being the oldest and most central part of the city and because its urban layout maintains the classic Spanish style of streets and perpendicular avenues that form homogeneously square [blocks](/source/City_block).[6]
