Galaxy cluster in the constellation Centaurus

Not to be confused with [Hydra–Centaurus Supercluster](/source/Hydra%E2%80%93Centaurus_Supercluster) or [Centaurus A/M83 Group](/source/Centaurus_A%2FM83_Group).

The **Centaurus Cluster** (A3526) is a [cluster](/source/Groups_and_clusters_of_galaxies) of hundreds of [galaxies](/source/Galaxy), located approximately 170 million [light-years](/source/Light-year) away in the [Centaurus](/source/Centaurus) constellation. The brightest member galaxy is the [elliptical galaxy](/source/Elliptical_galaxy) [NGC 4696](/source/NGC_4696) (~11m). The Centaurus cluster shares its supercluster, the [Hydra–Centaurus Supercluster](/source/Hydra%E2%80%93Centaurus_Supercluster), with [IC 4329 Cluster](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=IC_4329_Cluster&action=edit&redlink=1) and [Hydra Cluster](/source/Hydra_Cluster).

The cluster consists of two different sub-groups of galaxies with different velocities.[3] Cen 30 is the main subgroup containing [NGC 4696](/source/NGC_4696). Cen 45 which is centered on [NGC 4709](/source/NGC_4709), is moving at 1500 km/s relative to Cen 30,[3] and is believed to be merging with the main cluster.[4]
