Concrete material using fly ash in place of cement

Cenocell samples

**Cenocell** is a [patented](/source/Patent) [concrete-like](/source/Concrete) structural material that is manufactured without the addition of [Portland cement](/source/Portland_cement).[1] It was invented by [Mulalo Doyoyo](/source/Mulalo_Doyoyo) at the [Georgia Institute of Technology](/source/Georgia_Institute_of_Technology).[2][3]

Cenocell is produced from a [chemical reaction](/source/Chemical_reaction) involving [fly ash](/source/Fly_ash) or [bottom ash](/source/Bottom_ash) and various [organic chemicals](/source/Organic_compound). The chemical reaction produces foaming, and results in grey slurry that resembles bread dough. The mixture is then [cured](/source/Curing_(chemistry)) in ovens at temperatures near 100°C. The result is a [homogenous mixture](/source/Mixture) with a high strength and low weight.[4]
