'''Cedar virus''' ('''''Henipavirus cedarense''''') is a henipavirus known to be harboured by ''[Pteropus spp](/source/Flying-fox)''. Infectious virus was isolated from the urine of a mixed ''[Pteropus alecto](/source/Black_flying_fox)'' and ''[P. poliocephalus](/source/Pteropus)'' in [Queensland, Australia](/source/Queensland) in 2009. Unlike the Nipah and Hendra virus, Cedar virus infection does not lead to obvious disease ''in vivo''. Infected animals mounted effective immune responses and seroconverted in challenge studies.<ref name="plospathogens.org">{{cite journal |first1=Glenn A. |last1=Marsh |first2=Carol |last2=de Jong |first3=Jennifer A. |last3=Barr |first4=Mary |last4=Tachedjian |first5=Craig |last5=Smith |first6=Deborah |last6=Middleton |first7=Meng |last7=Yu |first8=Shawn |last8=Todd |first9=Adam J. |last9=Foord|date=2 August 2012 |title=Cedar Virus: A Novel Henipavirus Isolated from Australian Bats |journal=PLOS Pathogens |volume=8 |issue=8 |article-number=e1002836 |doi=10.1371/journal.ppat.1002836 |pmid=22879820 |last10=Haring |first10=Volker |last11=Payne |first11=Jean |last12=Robinson |first12=Rachel |last13=Broz |first13=Ivano |last14=Crameri |first14=Gary |last15=Field |first15=Hume E. |last16=Wang |first16=Lin-Fa |pmc=3410871 |doi-access=free }}</ref>

Unlike Hendra and Nipah, which attach to [Ephrin B2](/source/Ephrin_B2) or [B3](/source/Ephrin_B3), Cedar virus can also attach to [Ephrin B1](/source/Ephrin_B1). This may be responsible for lack of observed pathogenicity or development of severe meningoencephalitis and spinal inflammation. However the atypical course of disease observed in Cedar virus infection, as opposed to the characteristic immunopathology among the prototypic Nipah-Hendra complex, may be related to Cedar virus' reduced ability to access the key immunomodulatory gene products, V, W, and C, embedded in the henipavirus phosphoprotein P.<ref>{{Cite journal|last1=Pryce|first1=Rhys|last2=Azarm|first2=Kristopher|last3=Rissanen|first3=Ilona|last4=Harlos|first4=Karl|last5=Bowden|first5=Thomas A.|last6=Lee|first6=Benhur|title=A key region of molecular specificity orchestrates unique ephrin-B1 utilization by Cedar virus|journal=Life Science Alliance|year=2020|volume=3|issue=1|article-number=e201900578|doi=10.26508/lsa.201900578|issn=2575-1077|pmc=6925387|pmid=31862858}}</ref>
