# Cecil Allenby

**Marmaduke Cecil Allenby** (30 August 1873 — 16 April 1932) was an English first-class [cricketer](/source/Cricket) and an officer in the [Royal Navy](/source/Royal_Navy).

The son of Robert Allenby, he was born in August 1873 at Elvington Hall in the [Yorkshire](/source/Yorkshire) village of [Elvington](/source/Elvington,_North_Yorkshire). He attended the [Britannia Royal Naval College](/source/Britannia_Royal_Naval_College) in 1886, graduating from there into the [Royal Navy](/source/Royal_Navy) as a [sub-lieutenant](/source/Sub-lieutenant#Naval_rank) in June 1893.[1] Promotion to [lieutenant](/source/Lieutenant_(navy)) followed in October 1895.[2] Allenby made a single appearance in [first-class cricket](/source/First-class_cricket) for [Hampshire](/source/Hampshire_County_Cricket_Club) against [Sussex](/source/Sussex_County_Cricket_Club) at [Portsmouth](/source/United_Services_Recreation_Ground) in the [1900 County Championship](/source/1900_County_Championship).[3] He was dismissed once in the match [without scoring](/source/Duck_(cricket)) by [Fred Tate](/source/Fred_Tate) in Hampshire's first innings, but was not required to bat in their second innings.[4] He also played [minor counties cricket](/source/National_Counties_of_English_and_Welsh_cricket) for [Devon](/source/Devon_County_Cricket_Club), making two appearances against [Monmouthshire](/source/Monmouthshire_County_Cricket_Club) and [Glamorgan](/source/Glamorgan_County_Cricket_Club) in 1902, and a third against [Cornwall](/source/Cornwall_County_Cricket_Club) in 1911.[5]

While serving as a [lieutenant](/source/Lieutenant_(Royal_Navy)), he was on 15 September 1902 posted to the [protected cruiser](/source/Protected_cruiser) [HMS *Argonaut*](/source/HMS_Argonaut_(1898)), serving on the [China Station](/source/China_Station).[6] Allenby retired from the navy at his own request in June 1912,[7] and the following year he was allowed to assume the rank of [commander](/source/Commander_(Royal_Navy)) on the retired list.[8] He returned to active service during the [First World War](/source/First_World_War), where he was appointed a superintendent with the Chart and Chronometer Depot at [Sheerness Dockyard](/source/Sheerness_Dockyard).[9] He was promoted to [captain](/source/Captain_(Royal_Navy)) on the [final day of the war](/source/Armistice_Day), in recognition of his service during the conflict.[10] Allenby died at [Mannamead](/source/Mannamead) in [Plymouth](/source/Plymouth) on 16 April 1932.[9]
