# Caydale

**Caydale** is a [Site of Special Scientific Interest](/source/Site_of_Special_Scientific_Interest) (SSSI)[1][2] within [North York Moors National Park](/source/North_York_Moors_National_Park), in [North Yorkshire](/source/North_Yorkshire), England. It is located 8 km northwest of the town of [Helmsley](/source/Helmsley), near the village of [Old Byland](/source/Old_Byland_and_Scawton), and includes the stream valleys around *Caydale Mill*. These streams feed into the [River Rye](/source/River_Rye,_Yorkshire). This valley system is protected because of the mosaic of habitats present that include grassland, peatland and heathland, and because of its populations of the butterfly called the [Duke of Burgundy](/source/Hamearis_lucina).

This protected area includes parts of *Murton wood*, *Yowlass wood* and *Moor Ings bank*. There are old quarries in this protected area that provide habitat for mining insects.[3]

## Biology

Plants in the limestone grassland include [wild thyme](/source/Thymus_praecox), [wild strawberry](/source/Fragaria_vesca), [fairy flax](/source/Linum_catharticum), [dropwort](/source/Filipendula_vulgaris), [bloody crane's-bill](/source/Geranium_sanguineum), [saw-wort](/source/Serratula_tinctoria) and [mountain everlasting](/source/Antennaria_dioica). The peatlands are located on the valley floors and here plant species include [wild angelica](/source/Angelica_sylvestris) , [meadowsweet](/source/Filipendula_ulmaria) , [devil's-bit scabious](/source/Succisa_pratensis), [water mint](/source/Mentha_aquatica), [grass of-parnassus](/source/Parnassia_palustris) and [bogbean](/source/Menyanthes_trifoliata). In fen meadow, plant species include [marsh valerian](/source/Valeriana_dioica), [marsh-marigold](/source/Caltha_palustris) and orchid species including [common twayblade](/source/Neottia_ovata), [common spotted-orchid](/source/Dactylorhiza_maculata_subsp._fuchsii) and [fragrant orchid](/source/Gymnadenia_conopsea).[1]

Insect species in this protected area include the butterfly called the [Duke of Burgundy](/source/Hamearis_lucina), and also the beetle species *[Oedemera virescens](/source/Oedemera_virescens)* (genus *[Oedemera](/source/Oedemera)*), *[Malthodes fibulatus](/source/Malthodes_fibulatus)* (genus *[Malthodes](/source/Malthodes)*), *[Pyrochroa coccinea](/source/Cardinal_beetle)* and *[Ischnomera sanguinicollis](/source/Ischnomera_sanguinicollis)* (genus *[Ischnomera](/source/Ischnomera)*). The cranefly *[Rhipidia uniseriata](/source/Rhipidia_uniseriata)* (genus *[Rhipidia](/source/Rhipidia)*) has also been recorded in this protected area.[1]

## Geology

The rocks underlying Caydale are [Corallian](/source/Corallian_Group) [limestone](/source/Limestone) of the [Jurassic period](/source/Jurassic).[1]
