The **Cavan Way** ([Irish](/source/Irish_language): ***Slí an Cabhán***) is a [long-distance trail](/source/Long-distance_trail) in [County Cavan](/source/County_Cavan), [Ireland](/source/Republic_of_Ireland). It is 22 kilometres (14 miles) long and begins in [Blacklion](/source/Blacklion) and ends in [Dowra](/source/Dowra). It is typically completed in one day.[1] It is designated as a [National Waymarked Trail](/source/Long-distance_trails_in_the_Republic_of_Ireland) by the National Trails Office of the [Irish Sports Council](/source/Irish_Sports_Council) and is managed by [Cavan County Council](/source/Cavan_County_Council).[3] The trail was devised by a local man, Harold Johnston, and set up by the Blacklion Community Council and the Cavan County Development Team between 1984 and 1985.[4]

From Blacklion, the Way climbs into the hills above the village, looking over Upper and [Lower Lough MacNean](/source/Lower_Lough_MacNean), before passing along the outskirts of [The Cavan Burren](/source/Burren_Forest) and past the Giant's Grave, an ancient [passage tomb](/source/Passage_tomb) and the highest point on the trail.[5] The route descends and passes the Moneygashel crossroads, where the remains of a [sweat house](/source/Sweat_lodge) may be found.[6] The route then passes the [Shannon Pot](/source/Shannon_Pot), the small pool which is the [source](/source/River_source) of the [River Shannon](/source/River_Shannon).[7] After following the banks of the Shannon for a few kilometres, the Way reaches a road which leads to the end of the trail at Dowra.[8]

The Cavan Way provides a connection between the [Leitrim Way](/source/Leitrim_Way) at Dowra and the [Ulster Way](/source/Ulster_Way) at Blacklion.[2] It forms part of the [Beara-Breifne Way](/source/Beara-Breifne_Way), a walking and cycling route under development, intended to run from the [Beara Peninsula](/source/Beara_Peninsula), [County Cork](/source/County_Cork) to [Breifne](/source/Kingdom_of_Breifne), [County Leitrim](/source/County_Leitrim) following the line of [Donal Cam O'Sullivan Beare](/source/Donal_Cam_O'Sullivan_Beare)'s march in the aftermath of the [Battle of Kinsale](/source/Siege_of_Kinsale) in 1602.[9]
