The **Catholic Church in Jordan** is part of the worldwide [Catholic Church](/source/Catholic_Church), under the spiritual leadership of the [Pope](/source/Pope) in [Rome](/source/Rome).

In 2023, [Christians](/source/Christians) made up 2.1% of [Jordan](/source/Jordan)'s population.[1] Of these half, or 1.06% of the country's population were Catholics (115,000 people).[2]

Catholics are divided in five Rites:

- 80,000 [Latin Catholics](/source/Latin_Church) (*Patriarchal Vicariate for Jordan* of the [Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem](/source/Latin_Patriarch_of_Jerusalem))

- 32,000 [Melkite Catholics](/source/Melkite_Greek_Catholic_Church) ([Melkite Greek Catholic Archeparchy of Petra and Philadelphia in Amman](/source/Melkite_Greek_Catholic_Archeparchy_of_Petra_and_Philadelphia_in_Amman))

- 1,500 [Syrian Catholics](/source/Syriac_Catholic_Church) ([Syriac Catholic Patriarchal Exarchate of Jerusalem](/source/Syriac_Catholic_Patriarchal_Exarchate_of_Jerusalem) covers also Jordan)

- 1,000 [Maronite Catholics](/source/Maronite_Church) ([Maronite Catholic Patriarchal Exarchate of Jordan](/source/Maronite_Catholic_Patriarchal_Exarchate_of_Jordan))

There are also thousands of [Chaldean Catholic](/source/Chaldean_Catholic) ([Chaldean Catholic Territory Dependent on the Patriarch of Jordan](/source/Chaldean_Catholic_Territory_Dependent_on_the_Patriarch_of_Jordan)) refugees from Iraq.

The whole of the country for all Melkites forms a single [Archeparchy](/source/Melkite_Greek_Catholic_Archeparchy_of_Petra_and_Philadelphia_in_Amman). Jordanian Catholics belonging to the Greek Catholic churches use the [Melkite](/source/Melkite) Rite, these are referred to as "Roum Catholiks" in Jordan (Roum or Rome referring to [Byzantine](/source/Byzantine), while those following the standard rites of the [Catholic Church](/source/Catholic_Church) are referred to as "Lateen" and belong to the [Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem](/source/Latin_Patriarch_of_Jerusalem).

An important Catholic charity in Jordan is [Caritas Jordan](/source/Caritas_Jordan).

## Parishes

There are 32 Latin Catholic parishes in Jordan in 2023.[3] [Melkite Greek Catholic Church](/source/Melkite_Greek_Catholic_Church) has 28 parishes, Syrian Catholics have 3 parishes, Maronite Catholics have 2 parishes and Armenian Catholics have 1 parish. There are 66 Catholic parishes in all Jordan, belonging to five Catholic traditions.

## Papal visits

There have been 4 papal visits so far to Jordan:

[Pope Paul VI](/source/Pope_Paul_VI) visited Jordan in 1964, as part of the first papal pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

[Pope John Paul II](/source/Pope_John_Paul_II) visited Jordan in 2000.

[Pope Benedict XVI](/source/Pope_Benedict_XVI) visited Jordan in 2009.[4]

[Pope Francis](/source/Pope_Francis) visited Jordan in 2014.
