The **Catholic Church in [Bahrain](/source/Bahrain)** is part of the worldwide [Catholic Church](/source/Catholic_Church), under the spiritual leadership of the [Pope](/source/Pope) in [Rome](/source/Rome).

The first Catholic church built in the Persian Gulf in modern times was constructed in 1939 on land given by the Emir of Bahrain.[1] Sacred Heart Church serves approximately 140,000 Catholics.[2] Bahrain established diplomatic relations with the [Vatican](/source/Vatican_City) in 1999.[3]

The [Cathedral of Our Lady of Arabia](/source/Cathedral_of_Our_Lady_of_Arabia) located in [Awali](/source/Awali) is the largest [Catholic](/source/Catholic_Church) church in the [Arabian Peninsula](/source/Arabian_Peninsula). The land for the church is being provided by [King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa](/source/King_Hamad_bin_Isa_Al_Khalifa) due to a request from [Pope Benedict XVI](/source/Pope_Benedict_XVI) in December 2008, and will cover 9,000 square meters.[1]

Bahrain forms part of the [Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Arabia](/source/Apostolic_Vicariate_of_Northern_Arabia). The seat of the vicariate is in Cathedral of Our Lady of Arabia. The Vicar Apostolic Bishop is [Aldo Berardi](/source/Aldo_Berardi).

## 21st century

In 2022, approximately 12% of the population were [Christian](/source/Christian).[4] Almost 10% of the country's population is Catholic,[5] making it the largest Christian denomination in Bahrain.

Protests from various [Islamist](/source/Islamist) groups have occurred over the donation of land for the construction of the church.[1] Although Bahrain does have a small native Christian population, most Catholics in Bahrain are expatriates from [India](/source/India), the [Philippines](/source/Philippines), [Sri Lanka](/source/Sri_Lanka), [Lebanon](/source/Lebanon), and Western countries.[3] Many parishioners cross the border from [Saudi Arabia](/source/Saudi_Arabia), where there are no churches and practising Christianity publicly is forbidden.[3] Churches in the country include [Sacred Heart Church, Manama](/source/Sacred_Heart_Church%2C_Manama), and Our Lady of Arabia Cathedral in Awali in central Bahrain.[2] Also, there are two communities for Eastern Catholic churches, the [Syro Malankara](/source/Syro-Malankara_Catholic_Church) Catholic Community and [Syro-Malabar](/source/Syro-Malabar_Church) Society.[6][7]
