# Catherine Barnard

**Catherine Sarah Barnard** [FBA](/source/Fellow_of_the_British_Academy) [FLSW](/source/Fellow_of_the_Learned_Society_of_Wales) is a British academic, who specialises in [European Union](/source/European_Union_law), [employment](/source/Employment_law), and [competition](/source/Competition_law) law. She has been Professor of European Union and Employment Law at the [University of Cambridge](/source/University_of_Cambridge) since 2008. She has been a [Fellow](/source/Fellow_(Oxbridge)) of [Trinity College, Cambridge](/source/Trinity_College%2C_Cambridge) since 1996, and is the college's Senior Tutor.[1][2][3]

## Education

Barnard read law at [Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge](/source/Fitzwilliam_College%2C_Cambridge) ([MA Cantab](/source/MA_Cantab)), and the [European University Institute](/source/European_University_Institute) ([LLM](/source/Master_of_Laws)).[4][5] She earned a [Doctor of Philosophy](/source/Doctor_of_Philosophy) (PhD) degree from the [University of Cambridge](/source/University_of_Cambridge).[4]

## Career

Barnard was elected a [Fellow](/source/Fellow_(Oxbridge)) of Trinity College, Cambridge in 1996.[6] She was appointed [Reader](/source/Reader_(academic_rank)) in European Union Law in the [Faculty of Law, University of Cambridge](/source/Faculty_of_Law%2C_University_of_Cambridge) on 1 October 2004.[7][8] On 1 October 2008, she was awarded a chair as Professor of European Union and Employment Law.[9]

In 2020, Barnard was elected as a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales.[10]
