**Catedral** is a [district](/source/Districts_of_Costa_Rica) of the [San José](/source/San_Jos%C3%A9_(canton)) canton, in the [San José](/source/San_Jos%C3%A9_Province) province of [Costa Rica](/source/Costa_Rica), it is one of the four administrative units that form [San José](/source/San_Jos%C3%A9%2C_Costa_Rica) downtown properly.[1][2]

## Toponymy

The district receives its name because of the [Cathedral](/source/Metropolitan_Cathedral_of_San_Jos%C3%A9) and the [catholic](/source/Catholicism) [Archdiocese of San José](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_San_Jos%C3%A9_de_Costa_Rica), the only archdiocese in the country which lies between its boundaries, along with several other government buildings.

## Geography

Catedral has an area of 2.35 km2[3] and an elevation of 1,161 metres.[1]

Catedral is on the center-east of the canton, and has a small portion of boundary with [Montes de Oca Canton](/source/Montes_de_Oca_Canton) at its eastern part. The division also borders (clockwise) [Zapote](/source/Zapote%2C_San_Jos%C3%A9%2C_Costa_Rica) district to the east, [San Sebastián](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=San_Sebasti%C3%A1n,_San_Jos%C3%A9,_Costa_Rica&action=edit&redlink=1) district to the south, [Hospital](/source/Hospital%2C_San_Jos%C3%A9%2C_Costa_Rica) and [Merced](/source/Merced%2C_San_Jos%C3%A9%2C_Costa_Rica) districts to the west, and [El Carmen](/source/El_Carmen%2C_San_Jos%C3%A9%2C_Costa_Rica) district to the north.[4]

This district comprises several "barrios" or neighbourhoods, like Bellavista, California (part of it), Carlos María Jiménez, Dolorosa (part of it), González Lahman, Güell, La Cruz, Lomas de Ocloro, Luján, Miflor, Naciones Unidas, Pacífico (part of it), San Cayetano (part of it), Soledad, Tabacalera, Vasconia.
