**Castulus** (died 286) is venerated as a [martyr](/source/Martyr) and [saint](/source/Saint). According to tradition, he was the [chamberlain](/source/Chamberlain_(office)) (or officer, valet) of Emperor [Diocletian](/source/Diocletian) and the husband of [Irene of Rome](/source/Irene_of_Rome).[2]

## Biography

A convert to the [Christian](/source/Christianity) religion, he sheltered Christians in his home and arranged for religious services inside the palace of the emperor because it was the last place that Roman authorities would search. Among those he sheltered were [Mark and Marcellian](/source/Mark_and_Marcellian).[3] He is one of the saints associated with the life and legend of [Sebastian](/source/Saint_Sebastian).

With his friend [Tiburtius](/source/Saint_Tiburtius), he converted many men and woman to Christianity and brought them to [Pope Caius](/source/Pope_Caius) to be [baptized](/source/Baptism).[4] He was betrayed by an [apostate](/source/Apostate) named Torquatus and taken before Fabian, [prefect](/source/Prefect#Ancient_Rome) of the city.[4]

Castulus was tortured and executed by being [buried alive](/source/Buried_alive) in a [sand pit](/source/Sand_pit) on the [Via Labicana](/source/Via_Labicana).[5] According to tradition, [Irene](/source/Irene_of_Rome) subsequently buried the body. She was later martyred herself, around 288 AD (Source unknown).

## Veneration

A church dedicated to Castulus at [Rome](/source/Rome), built on the site of his martyrdom, existed from at least the seventh century. Castulus was venerated in [Bavaria](/source/Bavaria) after his [relics](/source/Relics) were taken to [Moosburg](/source/Moosburg). Duke [Henry the Lion](/source/Henry_the_Lion) started the construction of the Kastulus Minster in 1171.

In 1604, some relics were also brought to [Landshut](/source/Landshut).[6] His relics still rest in [St. Martin's church](/source/St._Martin's_Church_(Landshut)), [Landshut](/source/Landshut) and in the [Saint Castulus church](/source/Saint_Castulus_Church%2C_Prague), Prague.
