'''Castle Junction''' is a locality where the northern extent of the [Banff–Windermere Highway](/source/Banff%E2%80%93Windermere_Highway) ([Highway 93](/source/Alberta_Highway_93)) intersects with the [Trans-Canada Highway](/source/Trans-Canada_Highway) ([Highway 1](/source/Alberta_Highway_1)), the [Bow River](/source/Bow_River), and [Bow Valley Parkway](/source/Bow_Valley_Parkway) (Highway 1A) in [Banff National Park](/source/Banff_National_Park), Alberta.<ref>{{cite web|title=Place names - Castle Junction|url=http://www4.rncan.gc.ca/search-place-names/unique/IANKK|website=Natural Resources Canada|publisher=Government of Canada|accessdate=October 19, 2017|language=en|date=October 6, 2016}}</ref> It is named after the nearby [Castle Mountain](/source/Castle_Mountain), clearly visible from the junction. The area is also referred to as '''Castle Mountain'''; however, the official location is approximately {{Cvt|1.6|km|mi|1}} southwest of Castle Junction along the [Canadian Pacific Railway](/source/Canadian_Pacific_Railway).<ref>{{cite web|title=Place names - Castle Mountain|url=http://www4.rncan.gc.ca/search-place-names/unique/IALMQ|website=Natural Resources Canada|publisher=Government of Canada|accessdate=October 19, 2017|language=en|date=October 6, 2016}}</ref><ref>{{google maps|title=Castle Junction, AB to Castle Mountain, AB|url=https://www.google.ca/maps/dir/51%C2%B0+16%E2%80%B2+7%E2%80%B3+N,+115%C2%B0+55%E2%80%B2+9%E2%80%B3+W/51%C2%B0+15%E2%80%B2+36%E2%80%B3+N,+115%C2%B0+54%E2%80%B2+11%E2%80%B3+W/@51.2649326,-115.9136966,15z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m10!4m9!1m3!2m2!1d-115.9191667!2d51.2686111!1m3!2m2!1d-115.9030556!2d51.26!3e0|accessdate=October 19, 2017}}</ref>

Work started here in 1910 on the Auto Route of the Great Divide, a project to build a highway across the [Rocky Mountains](/source/Rocky_Mountains), when construction began on a road from Castle Junction to [Banff](/source/Banff%2C_Alberta). Following an interruption caused by [World War I](/source/World_War_I), construction wrapped up in 1923 when the newly constructed road between [Calgary](/source/Calgary) and Banff was joined to the Windermere Highway via the road between Castle Junction and Banff.<ref>Crag & Canyon - July 7, 1923</ref><ref>{{cite news |last=Liddell |first=Ken |title = Mountain Road Built to Fit the Contour | newspaper = [Calgary Herald](/source/Calgary_Herald) | location = Calgary, Alberta | page = 14 | date = 1953-06-24 | url = https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=0y9kAAAAIBAJ&pg=6449,4147684 | accessdate = 2012-09-21}}</ref>

Prime Minister [Mackenzie King](/source/Mackenzie_King) changed the name of Castle Mountain to Mount Eisenhower in 1946 to honour the [World War II](/source/World_War_II) general [Dwight D. Eisenhower](/source/Dwight_D._Eisenhower).<ref>{{cite news |title = Majestic Mount Eisenhower Is Home of Chinook Wind, Legend Claims | newspaper = [Ottawa Citizen](/source/Ottawa_Citizen) | location = Ottawa, Ontario | page = 19 | date = 1946-01-11 | url = https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=0fwuAAAAIBAJ&pg=4024,1659378 | accessdate = 2012-09-21}}</ref> Correspondingly, Castle Junction was called Eisenhower Junction. Castle Mountain was officially restored to its original name in 1979, at which time Eisenhower Junction was also renamed Castle Junction.<ref>{{cite news | title = It's Castle Mountain Again | newspaper = [Milwaukee Sentinel](/source/Milwaukee_Sentinel) | location = Milwaukee, Wisconsin | page = 2 (Part 3) | date = 1979-11-27 | url = https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=1oBQAAAAIBAJ&pg=1867,5338379 | accessdate = 2012-09-21 }}{{Dead link|date=January 2026 |bot=InternetArchiveBot }}</ref>

A group of lodges and the Castle Mountain [campground](/source/campground) are within a kilometre of the junction. Several hiking trails are available in the vicinity. The trailhead for hikes to Silverton Falls and Rockbound Lake is approximately 200 metres east of Castle Junction.<ref>{{cite web | title = Hiking Trails in the Castle Junction Area | publisher = [Parks Canada](/source/Parks_Canada) | date = 2009-11-15 | url = https://www.pc.gc.ca/pn-np/ab/banff/activ/activ1/b.aspx | accessdate = 2012-09-21 }}{{Dead link|date=November 2018 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }}</ref> The remains of Silver City, a 19th-century settlement founded by [prospectors](/source/prospecting) at the base of Castle Mountain, are nearby.<ref>{{cite book | last = Luxton | first = Eleanor Georgina | title = Banff: Canada's First National Park | publisher = Summerthought Publishing | date = 2008 | edition=2 | pages = 56–57 | url = https://books.google.com/books?id=X4mnaRet4uYC&pg=PA57 |isbn = 9780978237547}}</ref> Also nearby is the site of the [Castle Mountain Internment Camp](/source/Castle_Mountain_Internment_Camp) used during World War I.
