**Castello** is the largest of the six [sestieri of Venice](/source/Sestiere_(Venice)), Italy.

## History

There had been, since at least the 8th-century, small settlements of the islands of [San Pietro di Castello](/source/San_Pietro_di_Castello_(island)) (for which the sestiere is named). This island was also called [Isola d'Olivolo](/source/San_Pietro_di_Castello_(island)).

From the thirteenth century onward, the district grew around a [naval](/source/Navy) [dockyard](/source/Dockyard) on what was originally the [Isole Gemini](/source/Isole_Gemini) (Corresponding to [San Lorenzo](/source/San_Lorenzo,_Venice) and [San Martino](/source/San_Martino,_Venice)). The land in the district was dominated by the *[Arsenale](/source/Venetian_Arsenal)* of the [Republic of Venice](/source/Republic_of_Venice), then the largest naval complex in Europe. A [Greek mercantile community](/source/Greek_community_in_Venice) numbering around 5,000 in the Renaissance and late Middle Ages was based in this district, with the [Flanginian School](/source/Flanginian_School) and the Greek Orthodox Church of [San Giorgio dei Greci](/source/San_Giorgio_dei_Greci) being located here, of which the former comprises the [Hellenic Institute of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Studies in Venice](/source/Hellenic_Institute_of_Byzantine_and_Post-Byzantine_Studies_in_Venice)[1] and the latter is now the seat of the [Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Italy](/source/Greek_Orthodox_Archdiocese_of_Italy).

Other significant structures were by the [monasteries](/source/Monastery) in the north of the quarter.

[Napoleon](/source/Napoleon) closed the Arsenal and planned what are now the [Bienniale Gardens](/source/Giardini_della_Biennale). More recently the island of [Sant'Elena](/source/Sant'Elena_(island)) has been created, and more land drained at other extremities of Castello.
