# Cassopaei

Ancient Greek tribe

The **Cassopaei** ([Greek](/source/Greek_language): Κασσωπαῖοι) were an ancient Greek tribe living in [ancient Epirus](/source/Ancient_Epirus) and occupying the coast between [Thesprotia](/source/Ancient_Thesprotia) and the [Ambracian Gulf](/source/Ambracian_Gulf), and bordering upon [Nicopolis](/source/Nicopolis). Their chief town was [Cassope](/source/Cassope) (Κασσώπη).[1][2][3][4] The *[Periplus of Pseudo-Scylax](/source/Periplus_of_Pseudo-Scylax)* describes the Cassopaei as living in villages;[5] but they afterwards rose to such power as to obtain possession of [Pandosia](/source/Pandosia_(Epirus)), [Buchaetium](/source/Buchaetium), and [Elateia](/source/Elateia_(Epirus)).[6] We learn from another authority that [Batiae](/source/Batiae) was also in their territory.[7]
