'''''Cassida''''' is a large [Old World](/source/Old_World) [genus](/source/genus) of [tortoise beetle](/source/tortoise_beetle)s in the subfamily [Cassidinae](/source/Cassidinae). The natural history of Cassida sphaerula in South Africa is a typical life cycle.<ref>Adam S., M. Campos, H.D.C. Heron, C. Staines, R. Westerduijn, & C.S. Chaboo. 2022. The [thistle tortoise beetle](/source/thistle_tortoise_beetle) (''Cassida rubiginosa'') has been used as a [biological control agent](/source/biological_control_agent) against [Canada thistle](/source/Canada_thistle).

The genus name is derived from Latin ''Cassis'' for a metal helmet.

There are at least 430 described species in ''Cassida''.<ref name=gbif/><ref name=bugref/> This genus contains the most species of all Cassidinae.<ref>{{cite book |author1=Boroweic, L. |date=1999 |title=A world catalogue of the Cassidinae (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).
