A native of [Brentwood, California](/source/Brentwood%2C_California), while in high school, Wellman played hockey at [Cranbrook Kingswood School](/source/Cranbrook_Kingswood_School) in [Bloomfield Hills, Michigan](/source/Bloomfield_Hills%2C_Michigan), winning state titles in 2004 and 2006. He then attended the [University of Massachusetts Amherst](/source/University_of_Massachusetts_Amherst) for two years where he played on the [UMass Minutemen ice hockey](/source/UMass_Minutemen_ice_hockey) team.{{citation needed|date=February 2019}}

On July 20, 2012, Wellman was traded to the [Florida Panthers](/source/Florida_Panthers) in exchange for a 2014 5th round draft pick.
