# Carson, Washington

**Carson** is a [census-designated place](/source/Census-designated_place) in the [Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area](/source/Columbia_River_Gorge_National_Scenic_Area), north of the [Columbia River](/source/Columbia_River) in [Skamania County](/source/Skamania_County,_Washington), in the southwestern part of [Washington](/source/Washington_(state)), United States. The population was 2,323 at the [2020 census](/source/2020_United_States_census).

Carson is located north of [Washington State Route 14](/source/Washington_State_Route_14) and the town lies south of [Stabler](/source/Stabler,_Washington) and between [Stevenson](/source/Stevenson,_Washington) to the west and [Underwood](/source/Underwood,_Washington) and the neighboring cities of [Bingen](/source/Bingen,_Washington) and [White Salmon](/source/White_Salmon,_Washington) to the east.

## History

The post office in Carson has been in operation since 1894.[2] The community takes its name from nearby Carson Creek.[3]

## Geography

According to the [United States Census Bureau](/source/United_States_Census_Bureau), the CDP has a total area of 4.7 square miles (12.2 km2), of which, 4.7 square miles (12.1 km2) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2) of it (0.43%) is water.

## Demographics

As of the [2020 United States census](/source/2020_United_States_census), there were 2,323 people residing in the CDP.[5] The population density was approximately 484.0 inhabitants per square mile (186.9/km2), based on a land area of 4.8 square miles. The racial makeup of the CDP was 88.5% [White](/source/White_(U.S._Census)), 0.3% [African American](/source/African_American_(U.S._Census)), 3.5% [Native American](/source/Native_American_(U.S._Census)), 0.2% [Asian](/source/Asian_(U.S._Census)), 0.6% [Pacific Islander](/source/Pacific_Islander_(U.S._Census)), 3.6% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. [Hispanic](/source/Hispanic_(U.S._Census)) or [Latino](/source/Latino_(U.S._Census)) of any race were 220 persons (9.5%) of the population.[5]

According to the 2023–2024 American Community Survey 5-year estimates, there were 1,082 households and 1,195 housing units. The median age was 53.5 years, and 26.6% of residents were 65 years of age or older. The median household income was $68,929, and 8.5% of the population lived below the poverty line. The homeownership rate was 73.5%, and the median gross rent was $910.[5]

## Parks and recreation

Carson is situated within the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area and outside the southern end of [Gifford Pinchot National Forest](/source/Gifford_Pinchot_National_Forest), which contains the nearby highland terrain areas of [Wind Mountain](/source/Wind_Mountain_(Washington)) and Dog Mountain.

The oldest arboretum in the Pacific Northwest, the [Wind River Arboretum](/source/Wind_River_Arboretum), is located in nearby Stabler. Carson has a local [hot spring](/source/Hot_spring), and hotel and resort businesses in the town provide [geothermal](/source/Geothermal_energy) [steam baths](/source/Steam_bath).
