**Carolyn Jane Griffiths** is a [railway engineer](/source/Railway_engineer). She founded and lead the [UK](/source/United_Kingdom)'s [Rail Accident Investigation Branch](/source/Rail_Accident_Investigation_Branch), where she had the position of Chief Inspector, reporting directly to the [Secretary of State for Transport](/source/Secretary_of_State_for_Transport). She was president of the [Institution of Mechanical Engineers](/source/Institution_of_Mechanical_Engineers) for 2017/18.[2][3][4][5]

Griffiths joined the rail industry in 1979.[6] She was elected a [Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering](/source/Fellow_of_the_Royal_Academy_of_Engineering) (FREng) in 2013.[7]

For her services to the rail industry she was awarded an honorary doctorate by [Cranfield University](/source/Cranfield_University) in the same year.[1]
