**Caroline de Oliveira Saad Gattaz**, better known as **Carol Gattaz** (Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation: [\[kaˈɾɔw gaˈta(j)s\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Portuguese); born 27 July 1981), is a former Brazilian [volleyball](/source/Volleyball) player.[1] She competed at the [2020 Summer Olympics](/source/2020_Summer_Olympics), in the [Women's tournament](/source/Volleyball_at_the_2020_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Women's_tournament), winning a silver medal.[2] Gattaz won the [World Grand Prix](/source/Volleyball_World_Grand_Prix) three times in a row.[1][3]

## Early life

Gattaz was born in [São José do Rio Preto](/source/S%C3%A3o_Jos%C3%A9_do_Rio_Preto).[1] Before playing volleyball, as a teenager, Gattaz played [futsal](/source/Futsal), defending her city's club [América-SP](/source/Am%C3%A9rica_Futebol_Clube_(SP)), where she played as a striker. Still in high school, she started playing volleyball.[4]

## Career

Gattaz, who played as a middle blocker,[5] started her career defending [São Caetano](/source/S%C3%A3o_Caetano%2FBlausiegel), then moved to [Rexona-Ades](/source/Rexona-Ades) in 2000.[6] After leaving Rexona-Ades in 2001, she played for several clubs, before joining [Finasa/Osasco](/source/Finasa%2FOsasco) in 2004, when she won the [Superliga Brasileira de Voleibol](/source/Superliga_Brasileira_de_Voleibol), she left the club after the 2006–2007 season.[7] In 2007, she moved to Italy, where she played for [Monte Schiavo](/source/Vini_Monteschiavo_Jesi), returning in the following season to Brazil, to defend Rexona-Ades again.[6] In 2011-2012 she played for Volei Futuro from Brazil.

Following a serious [anterior cruciate ligament injury](/source/Anterior_cruciate_ligament_injury)[8] that was not being resolved through physiotherapy and that she already tried to solve through surgery [9], Gattaz decided to end her career in 2026 when she was forty four years old and was playing for the [Praia Clube](/source/Praia_Clube) team. [10][11]

After retiring, Gattaz underwent another knee surgery to resolve her injury.[12]

### National team

Defending the [national team](/source/Brazil_women's_national_volleyball_team), she won the [South American Women's Volleyball Championship](/source/South_American_Women's_Volleyball_Championship) in 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2009[3] and the [World Grand Prix](/source/Volleyball_World_Grand_Prix) in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009.[1][3][13]

She also won a silver medal at the [2020 Summer Olympics](/source/Volleyball_at_the_2020_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Women's_tournament). [14]

## Personal life

She is openly lesbian.[15]
