In the [First World War](/source/First_World_War), the area was the site of heavy fighting, particularly during the [Battle of the Somme](/source/Battle_of_the_Somme). It was also one of the sites where large British [mines were exploded](/source/Mines_on_the_first_day_of_the_Somme) on the first day that battle.
