## Biography

### Early life and education

Carmen Avram was born in [Vișeu de Sus](/source/Vi%C8%99eu_de_Sus), [Maramureș County](/source/Maramure%C8%99_County), a small town situated in the picturesque mountainous region of northern [Transylvania](/source/Transylvania). Her father was a [Romanian language](/source/Romanian_language) professor and her mother worked as a chemical laboratory analyst at the pharmaceutical plant *[Terapia](/source/Terapia)*.[3] She has two siblings, a brother and a sister. She attended the local [German-language](/source/German_language) school, where she witnessed the massive emigration drive of her [ethnic German](/source/Germans_of_Romania) colleagues to the [Federal Republic of Germany](/source/West_Germany), which has a major impact on her worldview. As a schoolchild, she helped plant a forest in the surrounding area of her hometown. This forest became the subject of a journalistic investigation decades later, in the documentary program "*[În Premieră cu Carmen Avram](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%C3%8En_Premier%C4%83&action=edit&redlink=1)*", as the forest had been [clear-cut](/source/Clearcutting) by illegal loggers and the town suffered unprecedented flooding.[4]

After graduating from Garabet Ibrăileanu High School in [Iași](/source/Ia%C8%99i), in 1984, she attended the Faculty of Construction and Engineering at the [Gheorghe Asachi Polytechnic Institute](/source/Gheorghe_Asachi_Technical_University_of_Ia%C8%99i), graduating in 1989. As a qualified [civil engineer](/source/Civil_engineering), she briefly worked at the [Călărași Siderurgical Plant](/source/C%C4%83l%C4%83ra%C8%99i_steel_works) up to the fall of the Communist regime in December 1989. After the [Romanian Revolution](/source/Romanian_Revolution) restored liberal democracy and the free market, she worked as a substitute mathematics teacher and in 1992 moved to [Bucharest](/source/Bucharest) to pursue a career in journalism.[4]

In 2002, she undertook postgraduate studies at the [National University of Political Studies and Public Administration](/source/National_University_of_Political_Studies_and_Public_Administration), specializing in [International Relations](/source/International_relations), graduating in 2004.[4]

### Journalistic career

Carmen Avram started her journalistic career at the leading daily newspaper *[Evenimentul Zilei](/source/Evenimentul_Zilei),* first as a news editor, then as [foreign correspondent](/source/Foreign_correspondent) between 1992 and 1996.[5] From 1996 to 2010, she worked for *[ProTV](/source/Pro_TV)* as a foreign affairs correspondent, covering major international events in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and the United States.[6] She then became an editor and reporter for the program "*[România, te iubesc!](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Rom%C3%A2nia,_te_iubesc!&action=edit&redlink=1)*" at *ProTV*.
