==Description==
''Carlquistia muirii'' is a [rhizomatous](/source/rhizome) perennial herb forming clumps or mats of stems with hairy green pointed leaves up to about 4 centimeters long. Leaves are arranged [oppositely](/source/Opposite_(botany)) on the lower stem, and alternately higher up. The [inflorescence](/source/inflorescence) is usually made up of a solitary [glandular](/source/Gland_(botany)) [flower head](/source/pseudanthium) on an erect stalk. The head contains many yellow [disc floret](/source/disc_floret)s but no [ray florets](/source/ray_florets). The fruit is a very narrow [achene](/source/achene) which may exceed one centimeter in length including its [pappus](/source/Pappus_(flower_structure)) of plumelike bristles.<ref name=fna/>

==Distribution==
''Carlquistia muirii'' is [endemic](/source/Endemism) to [California](/source/California). It has a [discontinuous distribution](/source/disjunct_distribution), occurring in the southern [Sierra Nevada](/source/Sierra_Nevada_(U.S.)) ([Fresno](/source/Fresno_County%2C_California), [Tulare](/source/Tulare_County%2C_California), and [Kern Counties](/source/Kern_County%2C_California)) and on the other western side of the [San Joaquin Valley](/source/San_Joaquin_Valley) around the [Ventana Double Cone](/source/Ventana_Double_Cone) in the [Santa Lucia Mountains](/source/Santa_Lucia_Mountains) of Monterey County.<ref name=fna/><ref>[http://www.calflora.org/cgi-bin/species_query.cgi?where-taxon=Carlquistia+muirii Calflora taxon report, University of California, ''Carlquistia muirii'' (Gray) B.G.
