**Carl Bryan Stonehewer** (born 16 May 1972) is a former [motorcycle speedway](/source/Motorcycle_speedway) rider from England.[1][2] He earned seven international caps for the [England national speedway team](/source/England_national_speedway_team) and five caps for the Great Britain team.[3]

## Career

Stonehewer's principal club in Britain were [Belle Vue Aces](/source/Belle_Vue_Aces) and [Workington Comets](/source/Workington_Comets).[4]

In 1997, he won the [Premier League Pairs Championship](/source/Premier_League_Pairs_Championship) partnering [Martin Dixon](/source/Martin_Dixon_(speedway_rider)) for the [Long Eaton Invaders](/source/Long_Eaton_Invaders), during the [1997 Premier League speedway season](/source/1997_Premier_League_speedway_season).[5] The success was the first of five Pairs championships.[6][7] He was also part of the Long Eaton four that won the [Premier League Four-Team Championship](/source/Premier_League_Four-Team_Championship), which was held on 3 August 1997, at the [East of England Arena](/source/East_of_England_Arena).[8]

In 1999, he won the [Premier League Pairs Championship](/source/Premier_League_Pairs_Championship) again, partnering [Brent Werner](/source/Brent_Werner), during his first season with Workington.[9] He successfully defended the title the following season but this time partnering [Mick Powell](/source/Mick_Powell) during the [2000 Premier League speedway season](/source/2000_Premier_League_speedway_season).

Also in 2000, he won the [Polish Speedway Second League](/source/Polish_Speedway_Second_League) with [Zielona Góra](/source/ZK%C5%BB_Zielona_G%C3%B3ra)[2] and won the [Premier League Riders Championship](/source/Premier_League_Riders_Championship), held on 10 September at [Owlerton Stadium](/source/Owlerton_Stadium).[10]

In 2001, Stonehewer recorded his a fourth Premier League Pairs success; once again as a Workington rider he partnered [Peter Ingvar Karlsson](/source/Peter_Ingvar_Karlsson).[11] The success continued as he won the Premier League Riders Championship for the second successive season.[12]

His last of a record five Pairs titles came in 2003 with [Simon Stead](/source/Simon_Stead). All five of his titles had been achieved with different partners. In 2004, he was part of the Workington four that won the [Premier League Four-Team Championship](/source/Premier_League_Four-Team_Championship), which was held on 21 August 2004, at the Derwent Park.[13]

Stonehewer announced his retirement in early 2006[14] after suffering horrific friction burns in a freak racing accident in 2005.[15] In April 2007, it was announced he was returning to the [Workington Comets](/source/Workington_Comets) team.[16]

He was part of the Workington four who won the Premier League Four-Team Championship, held on 26 July 2008, at [Derwent Park](/source/Derwent_Park). It was Stonehewer's fourth fours title. [17]
