**Carl Randall**, born **Carlo Lombardi**, is a British [figurative painter](/source/Figurative_painter), whose work is based on images of modern Japan, resulting from the artist living for a decade in [Tokyo](/source/Tokyo). These works came to prominence after they were exhibited at the [National Portrait Gallery in London](/source/National_Portrait_Gallery_in_London), and other exhibitions in the UK and Japan. He also subsequently made a series of paintings based on contemporary London.

## Early life and education

Randall was born Carlo Lombardi.[1][2]

He is a graduate of the [Slade School of Fine Art](/source/Slade_School_of_Fine_Art) London (BA Fine Art),[3] the [Royal Drawing School](/source/Royal_Drawing_School) London (The Drawing Year),[4] and [Tokyo University of the Arts](/source/Tokyo_University_of_the_Arts) Japan (MFA & PhD Fine Art).[5]

## Career

### Japan paintings

Randall was awarded the BP Travel Award 2012,[7][8] for his proposal to walk in the footsteps of the Japanese [ukiyo-e](/source/Ukiyo-e) printmaker [Andō Hiroshige](/source/And%C5%8D_Hiroshige), creating paintings of the people and places of contemporary Japan.[9] His time in Japan resulted in a group of 15 paintings exhibited at the [National Portrait Gallery](/source/National_Portrait_Gallery%2C_London) in London as part of the 2013 [BP Portrait Award](/source/BP_Portrait_Award) exhibition *In the Footsteps of Hiroshige – The Tokaido Highway and Portraits of Modern Japan*.[6][10][11]

The exhibition subsequently toured to the [Aberdeen Art Gallery](/source/Aberdeen_Art_Gallery) in [Scotland](/source/Scotland),[12] [Wolverhampton Art Gallery](/source/Wolverhampton_Art_Gallery) in England,[11] and then formed his solo exhibition in Japan, *Portraits from Edo to the Present*[13][14] at the Shizuoka City Tokaido Hiroshige Museum in [Shizuoka](/source/Shizuoka_(city)), where the paintings were exhibited alongside Hiroshige's original [The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō](/source/The_Fifty-three_Stations_of_the_T%C5%8Dkaid%C5%8D) woodblock prints. In conjunction with these exhibitions, the book *Carl Randall – Japan Portraits* was published, illustrating paintings and drawings made in Japan, with a foreword by British author [Desmond Morris](/source/Desmond_Morris), and an introduction by the late American writer [Donald Richie](/source/Donald_Richie).[15]

A short documentary, *Carl Randall – Japan Portraits*, showed Randall painting and drawing in Japan.[16] His Japan paintings were also the subject of a 2016 interview by the [BBC World Service](/source/BBC_World_Service),[17] and he was also interviewed by [CNN](/source/CNN) about his Japanese work.[18]

In 2026, he was commissioned by Creative Restaurant Group to make a series of paintings for Kioku by Endo, a high-end contemporary Japanese restaurant[19] founded by Michelin star chef Kazutoshi Endo[20][21], on the top floor of luxury hotel[22] [Raffles London at The OWO](/source/Raffles_London_at_The_OWO) in [Whitehall](/source/Whitehall), [London](/source/London). The brief given to Randall was to create paintings that responded to the restaurant's environment and incorporated Japanese influences.[23]

### London paintings

*London Portraits* is a series of 15 paintings made upon Randall's return to the UK, of people who have contributed to British culture and society.[24][25][26] Each sitter was asked to choose a location in London for the background of their portrait. They include newscaster [Jon Snow](/source/Jon_Snow_(journalist)), actress [Julie Walters](/source/Julie_Walters), comedian [Jo Brand](/source/Jo_Brand), animator [Nick Park](/source/Nick_Park), author/illustrator [Raymond Briggs](/source/Raymond_Briggs), novelist [David Mitchell](/source/David_Mitchell_(author)), actress [Katie Leung](/source/Katie_Leung), illustrator [Dave McKean](/source/Dave_McKean), poet [Benjamin Zephaniah](/source/Benjamin_Zephaniah), movie producer [Jeremy Thomas](/source/Jeremy_Thomas), filmmaker [Julien Temple](/source/Julien_Temple), poet [Simon Armitage](/source/Simon_Armitage), choreographer [Akram Khan](/source/Akram_Khan_(dancer)), zoologist [Desmond Morris](/source/Desmond_Morris), actor [Antony Sher](/source/Antony_Sher) and director of the [Royal Shakespeare Company](/source/Royal_Shakespeare_Company), [Gregory Doran](/source/Gregory_Doran).[27] A short documentary, *Carl Randall – London Portraits*, was made in conjunction with the project, showing Randall meeting and painting the sitters – each explaining their choice of location in London for the portrait.[27] Prints of this series were displayed at the print room of the National Portrait Gallery, London.[24][25][26]

In 2017, Randall created a large [monochrome painting](/source/Monochrome_painting) depicting [Piccadilly Circus](/source/Piccadilly_Circus), which involved meeting and painting the portraits of over 75 London residents directly from life.[28] In 2018, he painted over 55 portraits in a large oil painting depicting central London's Waterloo Bridge and Thames River area[29][30] (exhibited at The Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition 2019).[31][32]

In 2021, Randall was commissioned by [Bob Bob Ricard](/source/Bob_Bob_Ricard) to create a series of four new portrait paintings of restaurateurs or people in the hospitality industry, for their new restaurant located in the [Leadenhall Building](/source/Leadenhall_Building), [the Square Mile](/source/The_Square_Mile).[33] The portraits depict chef & author [Pierre Koffmann](/source/Pierre_Koffmann); food critic for Bloomberg for 25 years Richard Vines; and restaurateurs/businessmen Leonid Shutov and Roman & Mikhail Zelman. The backdrops include the City, the Barbican centre, and [5 Hertford Street](/source/5_Hertford_Street) Club in Mayfair.[34]

## Recognition

As well as the BP Travel Award, he also received first prize in the 1998 [RWS/Sunday Times Watercolour Competition](/source/RWS%2FSunday_Times_Watercolour_Competition),[35] he twice received Second prize in The William Coldstream Painting Competition at The Slade School (1996 & 1997),[36] and was awarded The 2011 Nomura Art Prize by Tokyo University of Arts[37] (for the top PhD graduate exhibition, with his painting 'Roppongi Nightclub' being bought for the University Museum's collection). Scholarships include [Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation](/source/Daiwa_Anglo-Japanese_Foundation)[38] and [MEXT](/source/MEXT)[5] to continue his career as a painter in [Tokyo](/source/Tokyo), where he lived for 10 years.[39]

He was selected to be the [artist in residence](/source/Artist_in_residence) at the 2007 Grand Prix Formula 1 Races in Japan,[40] and was interviewed about his paintings for the CNN programme 'The Japanese Grand Prix: F1 in Japan'.[18] He was also invited to be artist in residence in Hiroshima City, to meet and paint portraits of *[hibakusha](/source/Hibakusha)* (survivors of the atomic bomb), as part of the exhibition *Hiroshima Art Document*[41] (the resulting series of portrait drawings now in permanent collection of UCL Art Museum, University College London [42]).
