## History

Caringbah memorial

*Caringbah* is an [Aboriginal](/source/Aboriginal_Australians) word from the [Kumbainggar language](/source/Kumbainggar_language) for *a pademelon wallaby*.[3] The suburb was originally called Highfield, but it is unclear whether this was a position description or whether it was named after an early resident. Caringbah was used from 1911, after the [steam trams](/source/Trams_in_Sydney) began operating between Cronulla and Sutherland.[4]

[Thomas Holt](/source/Thomas_Holt_(Australian_politician)) (1811–88) owned most of the land that stretched from [Sutherland](/source/Sutherland%2C_New_South_Wales) to [Cronulla](/source/Cronulla) in the 1860s. Most of the area around Miranda and Caringbah was used for [market gardening](/source/Market_gardening) from the 1880s. Caringbah was still used for orchards and farming until after [World War II](/source/World_War_II). The [railway line](/source/Cronulla_railway_line) to Cronulla opened in 1939.[5]
