**Career Boy** (foaled 1953 in [Kentucky](/source/Kentucky)) was an American [Champion](/source/Eclipse_Award) [Thoroughbred](/source/Thoroughbred) [racehorse](/source/Horse_racing).

## Background

He was bred and raced by [Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney](/source/Cornelius_Vanderbilt_Whitney), a member of the prominent horse-racing [Whitney family](/source/Whitney_family). Out of the mare Swanky, whose damsire [Mahmoud](/source/Mahmoud_(horse)) won the 1936 [Epsom Derby](/source/Epsom_Derby), he was sired by Whitney's [Phalanx](/source/Phalanx_(horse)), the 1947 [Belmont Stakes](/source/Belmont_Stakes) winner and [American Champion Three-Year-Old Male Horse](/source/American_Champion_Three-Year-Old_Male_Horse).[1]

Career Boy was trained by future [U.S. Racing Hall of Fame](/source/National_Museum_of_Racing_and_Hall_of_Fame) inductee [Sylvester Veitch](/source/Sylvester_Veitch).

## Racing career

At age two, Career Boy won important races such as the [Grand Union Hotel Stakes](/source/Grand_Union_Hotel_Stakes) and the [United States Hotel Stakes](/source/United_States_Hotel_Stakes). He ran second to [Needles](/source/Needles_(horse)) in the [Hopeful Stakes](/source/Hopeful_Stakes), then had another second-place result in the [Garden State Stakes](/source/Garden_State_Stakes) to winner [Prince John](/source/Prince_John_(horse)) but ahead of third-place finisher Needles.

Going into his three-year-old season in 1956, Career Boy was assigned the [Experimental Free Handicap's](/source/Experimental_Free_Handicap) 126 pound high-weight. Under jockey [Eric Guerin](/source/Eric_Guerin), Career Boy won the [Gotham Stakes](/source/Gotham_Stakes) and ran second in the [Blue Grass Stakes](/source/Blue_Grass_Stakes) en route to a sixth-place finish in the 1956 [Kentucky Derby](/source/Kentucky_Derby). He did not run in the [Preakness Stakes](/source/Preakness_Stakes), but in the ensuing [Belmont Stakes](/source/Belmont_Stakes), the third leg of the [U.S. Triple Crown](/source/Triple_Crown_of_Thoroughbred_Racing#United_States_Triple_Crowns) series, he made a powerful stretch run to finish a neck second to Needles with Preakness winner [Fabius](/source/Fabius_(horse)) in third.[2]

In September 1956, Career Boy showed an affinity for racing on the grass with a one-length win under jockey [Sam Boulmetis](/source/Sam_Boulmetis%2C_Sr.) in the [United Nations Handicap](/source/United_Nations_Handicap) at [Atlantic City Race Course](/source/Atlantic_City_Race_Course).[3] Owner C. V. Whitney then decided to send his top two runners to [Longchamp Racecourse](/source/Longchamp_Racecourse) in [Paris](/source/Paris), [France](/source/France), to run in the prestigious [Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe](/source/Prix_de_l'Arc_de_Triomphe). Entered with stablemate [Fisherman](/source/Fisherman_(American_horse)) and with [Eddie Arcaro](/source/Eddie_Arcaro) riding, Career Boy finished fourth in the 1956 Arc to [Ribot](/source/Ribot_(horse)).[4] Career Boy's 1956 performances earned him [American Champion Male Turf Horse](/source/American_Champion_Male_Turf_Horse) honors.

## Stud record

Retired to [stud](/source/Stud_(animal)) duty, Career Boy stood in the United States until age thirteen when he was sent to a breeding operation in [Argentina](/source/Argentina). He was not successful as a sire.
