New Zealand bittercress was described by [Joseph Dalton Hooker](/source/Joseph_Dalton_Hooker) as "a small and very distinct species of ''Cardamine'', wiry and fragile in every part’".<ref name=Hooker/>  The plant has a low and spreading growth habit with unbranched stems which creep along the ground.  It produces daughter plants through rooting at the nodes.  The basal, compound [leaves](/source/leaf) have three to five leaflets, with the terminal leaflet being up to twice as large as the lateral ones.<ref name=post/>

==Distribution and habitat==
The plant is native to [New Zealand](/source/New_Zealand)’s subantarctic [Auckland](/source/Auckland_Islands) and [Campbell Islands](/source/Campbell_Island%2C_New_Zealand), as well as to [Australia](/source/Australia)’s [Macquarie Island](/source/Macquarie_Island), where it occurs in [alpine tundra](/source/alpine_tundra) and rocky coastal habitats.  It has been accidentally introduced to other parts of the world, including [North America](/source/North_America) and [Europe](/source/Europe), where it is a [weed](/source/weed) of nursery crops grown in [polytunnel](/source/polytunnel)s.<ref name=post>Post ''et al''.
