**Caralee McElroy** (born December 27, 1983) is a [Brooklyn](/source/Brooklyn)-based American multi-instrumentalist who has played in the bands [Xiu Xiu](/source/Xiu_Xiu), XXL, and [Cold Cave](/source/Cold_Cave).

## Biography

McElroy was born in [Olympia, WA](/source/Olympia%2C_Washington) and was raised in [Modesto, California](/source/Modesto%2C_California) and [Seattle, Washington](/source/Seattle%2C_Washington). She grew up immersed in both music and the visual arts.[1] Her father, Brent, is a [luthier](/source/Luthier) and builds acoustic guitars.[2]

## Music

At seven, McElroy started to study the flute, and throughout her school years, she picked up the [guitar](/source/Guitar), [percussion](/source/Percussion), [drums](/source/Drums), and [keyboards](/source/Keyboard_instrument).[1]

### Xiu Xiu

In 2003, McElroy met her long-lost cousin, [Jamie Stewart](/source/Jamie_Stewart_(American_musician)) of Xiu Xiu. They needed a multi-instrumentalist, so she auditioned and joined Xiu Xiu during their *[Fabulous Muscles](/source/Fabulous_Muscles)* tour in 2004.[1] McElroy left Xiu Xiu in May 2009.[3]

### Cold Cave

In February 2009, Caralee joined the band [Cold Cave](/source/Cold_Cave). She left in early 2010.

### Other activities and collaborations

McElroy appeared on recordings for [Casiotone for the Painfully Alone](/source/Casiotone_for_the_Painfully_Alone) in 2006.[4] As of 2009, she has been collaborating on a yet-to-be-named musical project with [Chris Garneau](/source/Chris_Garneau).[5]
