### Military use

A Captain of the Guard is the commanding position of a [military](/source/Military) security force. The position of Captain of the Guard is no longer associated with the rank of [Captain](/source/Captain_(land)). The Guard is commonly associated with [bodyguard](/source/Bodyguard) duty for [royalty](/source/Monarchy) like the [royal guards](/source/Royal_guard) or [head of state](/source/Head_of_state), but the Guard can refer to the military security force of a [city](/source/City) or region such as a [province](/source/Province), [state](/source/Federated_state), or [territory](/source/Territory_(administrative_division)).

### Jail and prison use

A captain of the guard is the leading guard for correctional institutes, such as jails and prisons, in some jurisdictions.

### Jewish temple guard

The captain of the guard oversaw a guard over the [temple in Jerusalem](/source/Temple_in_Jerusalem), which consisted of three [priests](/source/Cohenim) and 21 [levites](/source/Levite).[1] The position is referred to in the [New Testament](/source/New_Testament) at [Acts 4:1](/source/Acts_4#Verse_1).[2]
