It encompasses the [Southern Highlands](/source/Southern_Highlands%2C_New_South_Wales) and the [Southern Tablelands](/source/Southern_Tablelands), including the [Canberra District wine region](/source/Canberra_District_wine_region), and borders the [Monaro](/source/Monaro_(New_South_Wales)) which surrounds the southern half of Canberra. It also sits roughly on the traditional lands of the [Ngunnawal](/source/Ngunnawal) and [Gandangara](/source/Gandangara) Peoples.

The Capital area is one of the oldest agrarian areas of NSW and is a commuter region of [Canberra](/source/Canberra), the nation's capital, and is to the southwest of [Sydney](/source/Sydney) via the [Main Southern railway line](/source/Main_Southern_railway_line) and [Bombala railway line](/source/Bombala_railway_line). 

The towns and villages in Capital Country range from sophisticated to quaint; their surrounding areas are mostly rural.
