The causeway is a [Roman](/source/Ancient_Rome) road which starts at Port Gate on [Hadrian's Wall](/source/Hadrian's_Wall), north of [Corbridge](/source/Corbridge), and extends {{convert|55|mi|0}} northwards across Northumberland to the mouth of the [River Tweed](/source/River_Tweed) at [Berwick-upon-Tweed](/source/Berwick-upon-Tweed). The estate was improved with a model farm in Gothic taste, designed by [Daniel Garrett](/source/Daniel_Garrett) for Sir John Swinburne, ca 1746, one of the earliest examples of the [Gothic Revival](/source/Gothic_Revival_architecture).
