**Cape Mentelle** is a [limestone](/source/Limestone) [headland](/source/Headland) on the [Indian Ocean](/source/Indian_Ocean) coast of [south-western](/source/Southwest_Australia) [Western Australia](/source/Western_Australia). It is within the [Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park](/source/Leeuwin-Naturaliste_National_Park), just north of the mouth of the [Margaret River](/source/Margaret_River_(South_West%2C_Western_Australia)) and 9 km (5.6 mi) west of the town of [Margaret River](/source/Margaret_River%2C_Western_Australia). It lies on the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, halfway between [Cape Naturaliste](/source/Cape_Naturaliste) 50 km (31 mi) to the north, and [Cape Leeuwin](/source/Cape_Leeuwin) 50 km (31 mi) to the south, on the route of the [Cape to Cape walking track](/source/Cape_to_Cape_Track).

## History

The cape was named on 4 February 1803 by French navigator [Nicolas Baudin](/source/Nicolas_Baudin), on his [expedition to Australia](/source/Baudin_expedition_to_Australia), after [Edme Mentelle](/source/Edme_Mentelle) (1730–1815), a French geographer, historian and cartographer.[1] It has given its name to a well known [Margaret River](/source/Margaret_River_(wine_region)) [winery](/source/Winery), [Cape Mentelle Vineyards](/source/Cape_Mentelle_Vineyards).
