'''Cape Meares''' is a small headland on the [Pacific](/source/Pacific_Ocean) coast in [Tillamook County](/source/Tillamook_County%2C_Oregon), [Oregon](/source/Oregon), [United States](/source/United_States). The cape forms a high steep bluff on the south end of [Tillamook Bay](/source/Tillamook_Bay), approximately five miles (8 km) northwest of the city of [Tillamook](/source/Tillamook%2C_Oregon). Much of the cape is part of the [Oregon Parks and Recreation Department](/source/Oregon_Parks_and_Recreation_Department)-administered '''Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint''' with three miles of hiking trails, which includes [Cape Meares Light](/source/Cape_Meares_Light) and the [Octopus Tree](/source/Octopus_Tree_(Oregon)). The cape is named after [John Meares](/source/John_Meares), a British explorer.

==Geography==
Immediately north of the cape is the community of [Cape Meares](/source/Cape_Meares%2C_Oregon), next to Cape Meares Lake. Cape Meares beach extends north of the community of Cape Meares, along a sand spit, or peninsula, that encloses Tillamook Bay. The peninsula is alternatively known as [Bayocean](/source/Bayocean%2C_Oregon), after a popular upscale resort town that occupied the beach in the early 20th century, until [beach erosion](/source/coastal_erosion) began to destroy the town beginning in the 1930s. Today, no significant remnant of the resort town remains on the beach.

Immediately south of Cape Meares is [Short Beach](/source/Short_Beach_(Oregon)).

==Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint==
The scenic viewpoint is the location of the "[Octopus Tree](/source/Octopus_Tree_(Oregon))", a large, multi-trunked [Sitka Spruce](/source/Sitka_Spruce)<ref name="Inc.2005">{{cite book|author=Let's Go Inc.|title=Roadtripping USA: The Complete Coast-to-Coast Guide to America|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=oeJ6yNM09FwC&pg=PA969|access-date=5 February 2013|date=2005-04-01|publisher=Macmillan|isbn=9780312335694|pages=969–}}</ref> with a trunk circumference of about 50 feet. It is accessible via a short hike from the main parking lot.
