# Cape Ellsworth

**Cape Ellsworth** ([66°17′S 162°18′E](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=66_17_S_162_18_E)) is a sheer rock bluff 290 metres (950 ft) high forming the north end of [Young Island](/source/Young_Island) in the [Balleny Islands](/source/Balleny_Islands). It was named by personnel of the [*Discovery II*](/source/RRS_Discovery_II) in 1936 for American explorer [Lincoln Ellsworth](/source/Lincoln_Ellsworth). The vessel, after picking up Ellsworth at [Little America](/source/Little_America_(exploration_base)) on the [Ross Ice Shelf](/source/Ross_Ice_Shelf), made a [running survey](/source/Running_survey) around the northern end of the Balleny Islands on the way back to Australia.[1][2]
