Cao Yang began his international career playing for the [Chinese U23](/source/China_national_under-23_football_team) where he was named in the squad to play in the [Football at the 2002 Asian Games](/source/Football_at_the_2002_Asian_Games) and saw China knocked out in the Quarter-finals.
