The river is a [tributary](/source/tributary) of the [Verdigris River](/source/Verdigris_River), and is usually a flatwater stream. The Caney forms just north of the town of [Grenola](/source/Grenola%2C_Kansas) in [Elk County, Kansas](/source/Elk_County%2C_Kansas), then moves south into [Oklahoma](/source/Oklahoma) near [Elgin, Kansas](/source/Elgin%2C_Kansas). It then flows south through [Osage County](/source/Osage_County%2C_Oklahoma), where it is dammed near [Bowring](/source/Bowring%2C_Oklahoma) to form [Hulah Lake](/source/Hulah_Lake_(Oklahoma)). Downstream of the Hulah dam, the river flows into [Washington County](/source/Washington_County%2C_Oklahoma) through the center of [Bartlesville](/source/Bartlesville%2C_Oklahoma), where it separates the city's downtown from its residential east side. It is popular for [canoeing](/source/canoeing), both above and below Hulah Lake. However, there are almost no facilities for boaters between [Wah-Sha-She State Park](/source/Wah-Sha-She_State_Park) (near Hulah Dam) and the confluence with the Verdigris River.
