# Canby Mountain

**Canby Mountain** is a 13,478-foot (4,108-meter) mountain [summit](/source/Summit) in [San Juan County](/source/San_Juan_County,_Colorado), [Colorado](/source/Colorado), United States.

## Description

Canby Mountain is located 6 miles (9.7 km) east of the community of [Silverton](/source/Silverton,_Colorado), on land managed by [Rio Grande National Forest](/source/Rio_Grande_National_Forest). Canby Mountain is situated on the [Continental Divide](/source/Continental_Divide_of_the_Americas) in the [San Juan Mountains](/source/San_Juan_Mountains) which are a subrange of the [Rocky Mountains](/source/Rocky_Mountains). Headwaters of the [Rio Grande](/source/Rio_Grande) form at the eastern base of the mountain,[3] whereas precipitation [runoff](/source/Surface_runoff) from the mountain's west slope drains into tributaries of the [Animas River](/source/Animas_River). [Topographic relief](/source/Topographic_relief) is modest as the summit rises 1,300 feet (400 meters) in one-half mile (0.8 km). Neighbors include [Sheep Mountain](/source/Sheep_Mountain_(San_Juan_County,_Colorado)), 1.87 miles (3.01 km) to the southeast and [Greenhalgh Mountain](/source/Greenhalgh_Mountain), 2.49 miles (4.01 km) to the east-southeast.[2] The [Continental Divide Trail](/source/Continental_Divide_Trail) and [Colorado Trail](/source/Colorado_Trail) traverse the peak's slopes and an ascent of the summit from historic [Stony Pass](/source/Stony_Pass) covers one-half mile of off-trail hiking with 890-feet of elevation gain.[4] The mountain's toponym has been officially adopted by the [United States Board on Geographic Names](/source/United_States_Board_on_Geographic_Names),[5] and was recorded in publications as "Mount Canby" as early as 1877.[6][7]

## Climate

According to the [Köppen climate classification](/source/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification) system, Canby Mountain is located in an alpine [subarctic climate](/source/Subarctic_climate) zone with cold, snowy winters, and cool to warm summers.[8] Due to its altitude, it receives precipitation all year, as snow in winter and as thunderstorms in summer, with a dry period in late spring.
