**CanalDigitaal** is a provider of digital television via satellite for the [Dutch](/source/Netherlands) market, using the [Astra](/source/SES_Astra) satellites at [23.5° east](/source/Astra_23.5%C2%B0E).

Initially customers were mainly Dutch citizens in the countryside who did not have cable access. But in the meantime the company also managed to expand into the cities. This is sometimes complicated in the Netherlands due to local [building codes](/source/Building_code) restricting the placement of [satellite dishes](/source/Satellite_dish). The company now also actively markets its products to countries outside the Netherlands and it is no longer necessary to have a Dutch address or bank account to take out a subscription.

CanalDigitaal is owned by the [Luxembourg](/source/Luxembourg) [M7 Group](/source/M7_Group) (Canal+ Luxembourg s.a.r.l.), also owner of the [Belgian](/source/Belgium) [TV Vlaanderen Digitaal](/source/TV_Vlaanderen_Digitaal) and [TéléSAT Numérique](/source/T%C3%A9l%C3%A9SAT_Num%C3%A9rique), the [Austrian](/source/Austria) [HD Austria](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=HD_Austria&action=edit&redlink=1), the [Czech](/source/Czech_Republic)/[Slovak](/source/Slovakia) [Skylink](/source/Skylink_(TV_platform)). Since September 2019, M7 Group is owned by [Vivendi](/source/Vivendi)'s [Groupe Canal+](/source/Groupe_Canal%2B).

## Smartcard

Unlike many [German](/source/Germany) and [British](/source/United_Kingdom) broadcasters, the Dutch [public](/source/Netherlands_Public_Broadcasting) and commercial broadcasts are not freely available via satellite. To receive the Dutch broadcasts a [smartcard](/source/Smartcard) is required to decrypt the [Mediaguard](/source/Mediaguard) signal. CanalDigitaal has recently switched from Mediaguard 2 to Mediaguard 3.

A standard [DVB-S](/source/DVB-S) or [DVB-S2](/source/DVB-S2) receiver is used, which can also receive other [free-to-air](/source/Free-to-air) broadcasts.

In 2017, Canal Digitaal went hybrid with a combined satellite and IPTV offer. The company is now working with several IPTV partners, including M7's online.nl service.[1]

## Fastscan channel list

The CanalDigitaal Fastscan lists all channels carried on the CanalDigitaal platform and almost all [free-to-air](/source/Free-to-air) channels on the [19.2° east](/source/Astra_19.2%C2%B0E), [23.5° east](/source/Astra_23.5%C2%B0E) and [28.2° east](/source/Astra_28.2%C2%B0E) satellites. Many channels are free, others are available only with a subscription.
